Widely anticipated, it fulfilled the wildest dreams of some, yet others were left disappointed. However, it was generally critically acclaimed as a good game and pleased fans. It also achieved a 4 star rating in the premiere issue of 'PlayStation - The Official Magazine'. NFS: Pro Street deviates from the Need For Speed series traditional tuner style, street racing, and cops. Now, all races are organized events that take place on tracks. The game also feels more arcadey, more like Gran Turismo with a wealth of performance and visual parts. Now, you can't just drift around corners. You need to brake and maintain a good line through turns to maintain your lead. The game lacks a solid story line, however, but here's a simple summary: You must beat Ryo, the king of racing. To do this you have to get past junor races, and gradually increase level and stature to take on the four bosses who specialize in each type of race. We'll look at these in more detail later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTROLS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the controls in NFS:PS. These are all the controls provided in the game / manual, as I am trying to save you the effort of trawling through the pages of the manual. ------------------------------------------- >>> CONFIGURATION 1 [Accelerate] - R2 [Brake/Reverse] - L2 [Clutch] - L1 [Shift Up/Down] - Right Analog Up/Down [Toggle] - D-Pad - Arrow Indicators - Up - Best Line Indicators - Down - Minimap - Left - Leaderboards - Right [Steer] - Left Stick [Look Back] - Triangle [Handbrake] - X [Nitrous] - O [View] - Square Button [Reset Car] - Select Button [Pause] - Start Button ------------------------------------------- >>> CONFIGURATION 2 [Accelerate] - Right Analog Up [Brake/Reverse] - Right Analog Down [Clutch] - L2 [Shift Up/Down] - R1/R2 [Toggle] - D-Pad - Arrow Indicators - Up - Best Line Indicators - Down - Minimap - Left - Leaderboards - Right [Steer] - Left Stick [Look Back] - Triangle [Handbrake] - X [Nitrous] - O [View] - Square Button [Reset Car] - Select Button [Pause] - Start Button ------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUPPORT LEVELS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- For casual and hard-core gamers alike, NFS:PS offers three different support levels ****** CASUAL ****** Choose casual controls if you don't play racing games. This settings lets you just accelerate, steer, and go! ***** RACER ***** Choose racer controls if you have experience with racing games, but are not a master **** KING **** Choose King Controls if you are a veteran racer who wants the biggest challenge. You receive no assists with this setting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAR LIST ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a full list of cars that can be found in Need For Speed: ProStreet. There are three types of Grip Races, which we shall delve into below. ********* GRIP RACE ********* The Grip Race, as mentioned above, is the normal circuit race. This is the basic form of the race, in which cars compete to cross the finish line after completing the required number of laps. Really, there isn't anything special about this race type. *************** SECTOR SHOOTOUT *************** In a Sector Shootout race, the track is divided into four parts. In the first lap, the records for each sector are set by the car in front. A score meter ticks down the points you have. You must have more points on the score meter than the sector record. When you arrive at the end of a sector, a notification will flash up on the screen, informing you whether you beat the sector record, or missed it. As you beat sector records the score on the score meter is added to your total tally. For owning the record for all four sectors in a race at any given time, you get 500 extra points for dominating all the sectors. *********** TIME ATTACK *********** In a Time Attack race, all the racers race together on a single track, competing for the best lap time over a series of laps, usually three. After the end of each lap, a notification flashes up informing you about who owns the best lap time. Since all the racers are racing together on the same lap, it can get pretty hairy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAG RACES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a drag race, two drivers compete for the best time over a preset distance, either 1/4 mile or a 1/2 of a mile. Drag races are all about perfect shifts. On the right of the screen, the shift bar shows up. You shift with the Right Analog Stick (see controls), by pushing it up and down. You rarely need to downshift, though. There are three shift stages, when the rev counter is in the white, green, or red. White means a missed shift, which bogs down the car and can prove to be costly. Green means a perfect/good shift, depending on the exact position, and red means a late shift. Keeping revs in the red for too long will result in Overheating, and, in turn a blown engine. Before a drag race, you must participate in a 'Burnout' minigame to heat up your tires. This involves keeping the rev meter in the green part of the rev counter for ten seconds. There are four stages of Burnout that I have managed to achieve, if there are any others I would love to know about them via e-mail. >> Weak Burnout >> Good Burnout >> Incredible Burnout >> Max Grip!! ********* DRAG RACE ********* In a normal drag race, drivers compete, along with several others, to post the fastest lap times over a 1/4 or 1/2 mile distance, as explained earlier. Again, refer to the above section for more details on normal drag races. A good time - around 5.5 - 8 seconds for 1/4 mile and 9 to 11 seconds in the later stages of the game. May sound impossible at first, but trust me you can do it! ******************** WHEELIE COMPETITION ******************** You'll need a muscle car with oodles of BHP to qualify for Wheelie Competitions. Personally, I use a 942 BHP Toyota Supra, but people have had huge success with Dodge Chargers, and Pagani Zondas. In wheelie events, your aim is to keep the car on its two rear wheels over as long a distance as possible. Remember, to pass a wheelie event and win, it is quite important that you shift when the meter is in the red or the green. Of course, we'd love to get all perfect shifts, but that is quite a challenge with a 1000 BHP monster. Also key to winning these events is Nitrous. As you enter the second gear, you should fire a bout of Nitrous, which will help alot in keeping the car tilted. A good target to aim at - about 1,100 - 1,400 feet in the later stages of the game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- DRIFT RACE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In drift races, your objective is to keep the car going sideways for as long as you can. Your score is adjudged by the car's speed, angle, and length (time) of the drift. The following are the bonuses you can get while drifting: >> Nitrous Drift - 100 points - Drifting while nitrous is on >> Long Drift - 250 points - Drifting for a long distance >> Stayed on track - 200 points - Not going off the scoring zone >> High Speed Bonus - 250 points - Starting a drift at over 65 mph As you approcach the apex of a turn, turn the analog stick sharply in the direction of the turn and apply the handbrake to start a drift. Immediately turn in the opposite direction and keep the stick held there, but release the handbrake. While the car is in a drift, fire NOS to speed it up, or press the handbrake to prevent it from going forward about every 5 to 7 seconds. Be aware that it may take some time for you to get better at drifting, it is one of the tougher modes, and may cause you problems. A good score to aim for - Once you get above 2,000 points, your game will gradually improve. Many say the RX-7 is the best for drifting, and I also use one for my drifting, as does the drift king. However, everyone is different, so experiment till you find something you like. I now get at least 4,000 points per race depending on the track. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPEED RACES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- *************** SPEED CHALLENGE *************** Speed Challenge is basically a return of the 'Sprint' mode in Carbon, but with a few changes. Firstly, the cars you will start to use will be quite faster, and you will need to drive carefully. I recommend smooth movements of the analog sticks, since jerky motions can casue the car to turn to much, and a crash at these speeds will almost certainly total your car. Secondly, the tracks will not have any turns that are sharp, all the turns can be taken without braking, though you may need to stop accelerating for some of them. In the cars department, I recommend a Murcielago/Porsche 911 Turbo in the later stages of the game. These cars a are fast and handle well on the circuit, though the Evo may seem a little too responsive to some. I used to use a Viper but now use a Porsche 911 GT2, which does not accelerate well but boasts loads of mid-range torque. ************* TOP SPEED RUN ************* A Top Speed Challenge consists of a series of checkpoints on a normal 'Speed' track. As you pass through these checkpoints, your speed is recorded and added to your overall tally. At the end of the race, the driver with the most points wins. You will, of course, use the same car as you do in Speed challenges. There's not much to this mode, though you may need to apply nitrous before a checkpoint if you are suffering right before a checkpoint. A good average speed - About 190-220 MPH in the later stages of the game. ============================================================================ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> CUSTOMIZATION - CHAPTER 3 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ============================================================================ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BLUEPRINTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Need For Speed: Pro Street introduces a new system of customizing your car. For every car, you have a set of 'blueprints'. Each blueprint for a car contains different settings for the performance and visual parts of the car. Blueprints can be shared and distributed online, but if you achieve a ranking on the leaderboards using someone else's blueprint, he/she gets credited (their name appears in the Blueprint credit area). After you install parts on your car, you can tune them to your liking, with a wealth of options for performance and visual parts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUTOSCULPT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Autosculpt makes a return from NFS: Carbon. This time, however, each part you choose to autosculpt will actually affect your car's performance! You may make the vents in the bumpers bigger to increase downforce, and so on. You can autosculpt all of the following: >> Bumpers >> Hoods >> Spoilers >> Roof Scoops >> Wheels Autosculpting Spoilers, Roof Scoops, and Wheels does not make any difference to the performance of the car, however, the rest of the parts do affect the performance of the car. You can see the changes in real-time using the new wind-tunnel feature and also by the bar in the lower half of the AutoSculpt menu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- VISUAL PARTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can install a wealth of visual parts to customize your ride to the max, and also use AutoSculpt to add a unique flair to your car. Here are some of the parts that can be customized visually. >> Paint >> Wheel Paint >> Vinyls >> Decals >> Bumpers >> Hoods >> Spoilers >> Roof Scoops >> Wheels Using the different parts and AutoSculpt, change the look and feel of your car and make it faster and better looking! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PERFORMANCE PARTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Various performance packs such as engine parts, suspension parts, turbos, transmissions, and nitrous packs are available. You can install these parts, which affect the car more and more as you install a higher level. There are five levels of parts. >> Stock >> Level 1 >> Level 2 >> Level 3 >> Level 4 You can tune all the parts by tweaking the settings in the 'Tune' menu, and then do a Dyno Test to check out the changes to your ride. Finally, update the blueprint, and get racing! Also, Level 4 parts can be obtained by using the cheat 'UNLOCKALLTHINGS', or can be won as rewards after winning/dominating Race Days later on in your Career. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIXING AND REPAIRING YOUR CAR ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obviously, your car will receive a lot of damage as you progress through the game. This will affect the performance and aerodynamics of the ride, and you surely don't want to race in every race with the same broken ride! There are three kinds of damage, which will fill up a third of the damage bar in increments. You can repair your car's damage with Repair Markers, Cash, or Total Repair Markers (used for cars that have been TOTALED) You may purchase markers for 5,000 in the Marker Management screen, and save these for repairs in excess of 5,000. 1 - LIGHT DAMAGE Light damage is cursory damage that affects performance in a minor way. I recommend using cash to fix this kind of damage, since it will usually not set you back alot. 2 - HEAVY DAMAGE You should save your repair markers for heavy damage, which takes a lot of cash to repair. Hence, I usually save my markers for cars with heavy damage. This affects preformance majorly. 3 - TOTALED! When your ride is totaled, your only option is to repair it with a total repair marker, which you will win by choosing the reward card for it after winning/dominating a raceday. Otherwise, your ride is wrecked, cannot be repaired with cash, and is gone forever. A trick, of course, is to quit the game and start the race again before it is saved after you total a car. However, this is sometimes frowned upon as cheating and is despised by veterans. ============================================================================ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> STREET KINGS / RACEDAYS - CHAPTER 4 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ============================================================================ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- STREET KINGS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ************************ KAROL MONROE - DRAG KING ************************ Karol Monroe places proffessionalism and preparation before everything else, qualities to which she attributes her absolute domination on the straight.
