Websites are now free to use this, and other guides of mine, without asking for permission beforehand, just as long as the content isn't changed and it's not passed off as your own work. Jul. 5th, 2004 (Final) - Registered a new domain name, so I wanted to change my FAQs so people know where to find them (outside of GameFAQs, of course). Added new section to "Other FAQs Written". Jun. 8th, 2004 (Final version) - It's official: this FAQ is dead. I've lost interest in the game, and since I was only working on player listings and stats, it's not really a huge loss. Sorry to anybody who was hoping for it to be finished. I figure two months of no work makes it officially dead. Apr. 8th, 2004 (v0.7) - I needed to update my contact info, so that's all I did. No work on the FAQ otherwise. Once I get more free time, and once I get tired of UT2004, I will resume this, and my others. Mar. 23rd, 2004 (v0.7) - Not much of an update today, I just corrected some things and added all the player and player ratings for the Anaheim Angels, so check out that section and tell me what you think of the layout and the way I organized it. Mar. 18th, 2004 (v0.6) - Finished off the "Team Rosters" section for the MLB teams; added the first four player ratings for the Anaheim Angels. Can't do much else today, due to a sore wrist and lack of sleep from the previous night. Mar. 17th, 2004 (v0.5) - Added a new section to "Offensive Techniques" with help about batting, due to lots of requests. Apparently, it's harder to hit this year. Added some new lyrics, and added two more more Team Rosters. I was also toying with the idea of making a new guide, which would contain nothing but the statistics for each player; instead, I've decided to add it to this one. Added a new section; "[19] Menu Heirachy"; added new section; "Game Vitals". Mar. 16th, 2004 (v0.4) - No real update today; just added a note to the Team Goals section, thanks to Tommy. Mar. 15th, 2004 (v0.4) - Added a few more team rosters, as well as several new sections: Team Goals, Team Abbreviations and EA Sports Bio. Also added two new sections regarding Dynasty mode; Team Chemistry and Player Happiness. Mar. 14th, 2004 (v0.3) - Added some abbreviations that were sent in by HarvardAce. Thanks to all of you who sent in abbreviations, too. I've clarified the situation with Barry Bonds, as my original answer was incorrect. I've decided not to include rosters under the team's; instead, I've added a whole new section, "Team Rosters", which is under the Team Listing. I've done this so that I have more room to work with, and can expand on it later if needbe (by including each player's specific ratings, for example); added "Controls" section. The "Team Rosters" section is currently incomplete (only seven teams done so far). Changed layout and altered "Contact Information" section. I changed my mind; I'll probably make a separate FAQ with player ratings, as adding it here would really drive up the FAQ size. Mar. 12th, 2004 (v0.2) - Finished a lot more. I added some lyrics, added the unlockables, added a new "Abbreviations" section, and finished off the teams. All I have to do now is add each team's roster and player stats, and that's going to take some time. Decided that I'm going to add ratings for every player; this will take time, so it'll be one of the last things to be added. Mar. 11th, 2004 (v0.1) - Just started. Got a big chunk done. The table of contents is still being worked on, so if something is incorrectly labeled, you don't have to e-mail me about it. You even have more control over how your runner slides than in any previous baseball game. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2.1] Pure Swing Control | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| EA has introduced what they call the Pure Swing System, which takes into consideration different factors, which, in turn, determines if you hit the ball, and if you do, where it goes. Timing - The first part of the Pure Swing Control measures your timing. If you swing too early, you will hit the ball with the very end of your bat (the fat end), which will usually cause a popup or a foul. Hitting it too late (closer to the skinny end) will usually result in a short grounder, directly to the first or third basemen, which will get you a quick out. Late swinging may also cause a foul. The perfect swing is when you connect with the ball in the center of the bat, which is the "sweet spot". When you do this, you have the greatest chance of hitting the ball. For more information on hitting and how swing timing, check out the in-game video tutorial titled "The Art of Hitting". Pitch Type and Location - The second part takes into considerating the type of pitch thrown at you and where it will go. Hitting a fastball while swinging late will usually cause a pop up that'll be really easy to catch. A curve ball may cause your swing to send the ball on an arc if hit incorrectly. If the pitch is heading toward one of the red zones (see the next part), you'll have a better chance; if its on its way toward the blue zones, you'll have a lesser chance. Batting Zone - Every batter has an individual batting zone comprised of red, blue and white squares. White squares are neutral squares; you have an equal chance of smashing the ball as you do missing it. The blue squares are your weak zones; you have a lower chance of hitting the ball good, and a higher chance of missing or fouling out/popping. The red squares are your strong zones; with a good connect, you can nail a home run or send the ball far enough to bring in a run, or get a double or triple. This isn't to say that you can't hit a homerun on a ball that's in a blue square, it's just that much harder. Pitcher Adjustments - The pitcher's have an AI system that learn from you. If you constantly swing at pitches that will be balls or you have no chance of hitting, the pitcher will remember this and will continue pitching those to you. If he pitches a fastball that you nail for a homerun, chances are he won't throw you another fastball, at least not in the same spot, your next turn at bat. This is remembered throughout the entire Dynasty mode, as well. If you're in the World Series game with a pitcher who threw you two homerun fastballs, he probably won't send you another, and he'll try to confuse you. This adds a great new challenge to the game. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2.2] Batting Directions | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Batting is the most important aspect. You need to know how to bat, and where to send the ball (or try to send it). When at the plate, you can press the left thumbstick in one of eight directions (as well as leaving it stationary), to try to get the ball where you want it to go. You need to read the pitch. Since there is no in-game way of telling you what pitch is coming until you miss it, you will learn them eventually. After ten or so games, when a pitcher throws you a Palmball, you'll know a Palmball is coming. NEUTRAL (stick in center) This is the safest hit, requiring nothing but timing. With a safe hit, the ball usually goes down the center of the field, over the pitcher's head, resulting in a line drive. If you hit the ball too late, you can cause a grounder for an easy out, or send it into foul territory. Hitting the ball too early can cause a very easy pop up which will probably not go past the pitcher's mound. It can also foul out, too. UP-LEFT Aiming the left stick up and diagonally left will send the ball flying down the left side of the field. Depending on your swing, this can result in either a flyball, a line drive, or a home run. UP-RIGHT Aiming the left stick up and diagonally right will send the ball flying down the right side of the field. Depending on your swing, this can result in either a flyball, a line drive, or a home run. UP Aiming the left stick up will send the ball flying down the middle of the field. Depending on your swing, this can result in either a flyball, a line drive, or a home run if hit hard enough. You may also hit it directly into the hands of the pitcher, resulting in a quick out. The shortstops may also dive and grab the ball. DOWN-LEFT Aiming the left stick down and diagonally to the left will send a short ground ball down the left side of the field. Great if your batter is fast and you need to get a man on base. The third baseman can snatch the ball up before you get to base, however. DOWN-RIGHT Aiming the left stick down and diagonally to the right will send a short ground ball down the right side of the field. Great if your batter is fast and you need to get a man on base. The first baseman can snatch the ball up before you get to base, however. DOWN Aiming the left stick down will send a short ground ball directly down the center. I don't see much use for this, because the pitcher will more often than not grab it, resulting in an out, or he'll catch the bounce and throw you out before you're even near first base. LEFT Aiming the stick to the left will result in a line drive up the left side of the field. This is great if you need to get a man on base, or want to bring in a run from third, sometimes second. Depending on how you hit it, you may get the ball going far down left field, resulting in a double, or even triple. RIGHT Aiming the stick to the right will result in a line drive up the right side of the field. This is great if you need to get a man on base, or want to bring in a run from third, sometimes second. Depending on how you hit it, you may get the ball going far down right field, resulting in a double, or even triple. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2.3] Bunting | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Personally, in all my 18+ years of gaming, I have only ever used the bunt in baseball games when absoloutely necessary. I don't like them, and I see no point to them. However, they can be useful to a lot of people, and sometimes they can net you a run by bringing in the runner on third. You should only use a bunt if you have a runner on first, it's a very close game (either tied or a minor lead), and you have no outs. If your batter is fast, with a high speed rating, you may use a bunt to try to get that runner to first. Any player with a rating of 75 or lower in speed should not attempt to bunt to get to first. You should never bunt when your batter has two strikes, because if you hit it foul, it is considered a third strike and your batter will be out. Also, never bunt when you have two outs, because the majority of bunts result in being tagged or thrown out. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2.4] Baserunning | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Baserunning can be an important aspect to the game, but it can also screw you over if not careful. When you have a runner on first, make sure he's fast. If his speed is eighty or higher, then you should lead off. The more you lead off, the further you get away from the bag, the easier you can be picked off. However, since you're fast, you can usually get to the base in time if the pitcher attempts to nab you. You should never, ever lead off with a slow runner unless you know for a fact the pitcher won't try to pick you off, and since you can't know that, you should never do it. The best time to use a huge leadoff is when your batter has an 0-2 count (zero balls, two strikes), and you have zero or one outs. When this happens, the pitcher will generally try to go for the strikeout, so he'll throw something like a Changeup or a Curve to get you to swing early. Let the ball float by; your batter will be out, but your runner will get to the next base. Again, you should only do this if your runner is fast, because a slow runner will take forever, and you just wasted an out trying to advance him. The game features a picture in picture (PIP) view of the diamond. You can select an individual baserunner by pressing X, Y, or B (third, second, first). With a runner selected, press the D-pad in a base direction to advance him. For example, press B to select the runner on first, then press LEFT on the D-Pad to get the runner headed to third (since LEFT equals third). He'll only stop when he gets to third, if he gets tagged, or if you stop him yourself. Alternatively, you can press the lEFT TRIGGER to send all the runners to the next base, or the RIGHT TRIGGER to make them all retreat to the previous base. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2.5] Sliding | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| In previous games, sliding was done automatically, you had no control over it, and your player slid however the game decided he should. Now, you have control over how your runner slides. Just like the batting system with the left stick, you use the right stick to determine how your runner will slide. You have six different choices. UP-LEFT Pressing up and diagonally left will result in your runner sliding into the left side of the bag headfirst. This is good if the basemen is on the right side of the bag, as you may avoid the tag. UP-RIGHT Pressing up and diagonally right will result in your runner sliding into the right side of the bag headfirst. This is good if the basemen is on the left side of the bag, as you may avoid the tag. UP Pressing up on the stick will result in a standard head slide into the bag. Your arms will be outstretched, reaching for the bag. However, since you are dead center, the basemen has a greater chance of tagging you for the out. DOWN-LEFT Pressing down and diagonally left will result in your runner sliding into the left side of the bag feet first. This slide is much slower than the head slide, but it's more accurate. It's best used when the basmen (or catcher) is on the right side of the bag and somewhat away (due to a bad throw, maybe). DOWN-RIGHT Pressing down and diagonally right will result in your runner sliding into the right side of the bag feet first. This slide is much slower than the head slide, but it's more accurate. It's best used when the basmen (or catcher) is on the left side of the bag and somewhat away (due to a bad throw, maybe). DOWN Pressing down on the stick will result in a standard feet slide into the bag. You will put one leg behind the other in an attempt to land on the bag. Since it is much slower than diving head first (the back of your shoe digs into the sand, unlike sliding on your stomach), it's not recommended unless the basemen is away from the bag. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2.6] Batting Help | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Due to lots of requests, I have decided to add this new section about batting. Apparently, a lot of people are having trouble hitting the ball, especially home runs. I can't provide any guaranteed help, because it all depends on your timing, but I can give you general pointers. My dynasty is currently the Toronto Blue Jays. My difficulty level is Pro with all the default sliders. I'm on my thirty second game, and I still have my default roster. I have hit a total of twenty home runs. The first thing you have to understand is timing. Regardless of your batter and the direction, if you don't have the right timing, you will miss the ball or send it into foul territory. For starters, I recommend you watch the tutorial called "The Art of Batting", available from the "MVP Tips" section off the main menu. There is no real way of telling you when to swing. You have to watch the pitch and swing when you think you'll connect. The best way to do this is to change the camera view to "1-Angle". This gives you a view from the left or right of the plate (depending on what hand the pitcher uses). This way you'll see the ball from an angled direction instead of directly ahead of you. The best time to swing is when the ball is the middle, halfway to you. If you do it right, and depending on the pitch, you should connect with it with the center of your bat, resulting in an "optimal" shot. The second part depends on the pitch type. Fast balls with speed by you, curves will go from left to right, and sinkers will come in an up-to-down motion. You need to keep your eye out and hit appropriately. The third part is your direction. You want to try to hit the ball in the same direction it is coming from for your best chance of contact. If a pitcher throws a curve that is coming from the left, you'll want to aim to the left of the field. Hitting it to the right when it's coming from the left could result in a pop, a grounder for an easy out, or a foul. Since there is no way to figure out where the pitcher will be coming from, you have to keep your eye on the ball. In time, you'll learn to tell where it's going and what kind of pitch it is, which will give you time to set up a good hit. The lower the difficulty, the less change the pitcher throws. If you play on Rookie, you'll see the same pitches a lot, in the same spot, so you can guesstimate it. On MVP, almost every pitch will be a different type and in a different location. The third part is your batter. As is mentioned earlier, each batter has his own strong and weak points. If a pitcher hits to your weak spot (the blue squares), your chance of connecting with a good hit is lowered. This doesn't mean it's impossible to get a triple from a weak zone, but it is harder. On the flip side, it's much easier to get a home run when the pitcher aims at your red spots, but it's still not guaranteed. Now that that's out of the way, there are four different icons that may appear when you receive a pitch. If a pitcher throws a bad ball, you'll see the icon appear in your batting box, telling you where the pitch will be. This only happens when the pitcher throws a "mistake", and it lets you know where it'll be so you can aim accordingly. If you see an icon that's filled in with solid blue, it means the pitcher has aimed a perfect pitch at one of your weak spots. This gives you the chance to act accordingly. If you see an icon that's filled in solid red, it means the pitcher's sent a perfect ball to your strong zone. This means if you hit the ball properly, chances are you'll get a double, triple or even a homer. The last icon you see will be a circle that has an X in it. This means the pitcher has tossed you a ball, and not swinging will give you one ball. You can swing at these if you want, but most of the time they'll give you nothing but a pop up, foul, or even a strike if you miss. Now, for home runs. I admit they are difficult to hit, but I never played MVP Baseball 2003, so I don't know how it has changed. I find the easiest way to hit home runs is to aim up and in the direction of the pitcher. If a pitcher throws with his right hand, aim the stick up and diagonally to the right. With the right contact, I usually send it down the right side of the field, giving me a home run. Now, this doesn't work all the time, but I have had a few by doing this. If you can't get any homers and are getting frustrated, there are two things you can do. The first is to lower the difficulty. It's easier to hit homers on Rookie than it is on MVP. If you don't want to lower your difficulty, you can just increase your Batting Contact and Batting Power sliders to give you an advantage. I hope the above tips help you. If you have any strategies for hitting the ball, e-mail them to me. E-mail can be found in the "Contact" section. Be sure to include a name so I can credit you. If you don't, I'll just use the first name in the "From" field of your e-mail. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3] Defensive Techniques | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Almost as important that offense, if not more so, you need to contain the opposing team's batters. Some people believe that the pitcher is the only defensive player, and the only reason there are fielders is if the pitcher screws up. This can't be further from the truth. Depending on how you pitch, where you pitch it to, and the type of your pitch, your opponent can either pop up, hit a foul, or smash a home run, the last of which is not good for your pitcher's morale, or your team. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1] Pitching | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Pitching is controlled from the pitching meter. Using one of the four face buttons and the black button, you can choose from your pitcher's repitore. A meter will appear onscreen, and this is what you use to determine where your pitch will go, and how good it will be. Before selecting your pitch, you must choose your target. Aim at one of the nine squares (remember: blue are weak spots, red are hot spots, and white are neutral). If your controller begins to vibrate, your pitch will result in a ball. Once you've decided where you want to pitch, press one of the buttons for whatever pitch you want, be it a curve or a sinker. The meter will appear. The longer you hold the button down, the faster your pitch, but the smaller the accuracy meter. When you've decided how fast you want to pitch, release the button, and watch the white line. When it gets to the green section of the meter, release it. If you release it while it is in the middle of the green, you'll get a perfect pitch. If you release it in the blue area, you'll either pitch a ball (far to the left or right, or way high or low), or you'll release a "bad" pitch. You'll know you've released a bad pitch when you see a red-filled circle on the batter's zone; this means he has a perfect opportunity to nail a double, triple, or even a homerun. Every pitcher in the game has stamina. The higher the stamina of your pitcher, the better he'll throw, and the larger his accuracy meter will be. Most pitchers will begin to throw bad when they read the 60% mark. At this point, you may want to warm up a pitcher in the bullpen. As the manager, you have the opportunity to visit the mound and talk with the pitcher. Depending on the pitcher's mood and how he's been playing, he can take the visit one of two ways; he'll see it as a positive reaction, and his stamina will be increased slightly. If he sees it as a negative action, one of two things will happen; his stamina will remain at its current percent, or it may drop slightly. Unless you're going for the "have a pitcher pitch the entire game" MVP points, it's a good idea to relieve him around the seventh inning to bring in your closer or reliever. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.2] Pitch Types | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| There are several different pitch types to choose from. Here is a complete listing of them, alphabetically. 2-Seam Fastball 4-Seam Fastball Changeup Circle Change Curveball Cutter Forkball Knuckleball Palmball Screwball Sinker Slider Slider Slurve Splitter |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.3] Fielding | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| If you have fielding set to manual, you do everything; this means all the running, catching and throwing is up to you. When its set to assisted, the CPU will take control of your runners and catch everything, but you still get to throw. On automatic, the CPU runs, catches and throws for you. There are four ways for you to catch balls, using the right thumbstick, just like sliding. UP Pressing the right stick up will cause your fielder to jump for the ball. If you are near a wall, pressing up will tell him to climb the wall, giving you the chance of stealing someone's home run. DOWN Pressing the right stick down will cause your fielder to dive or stretch. If you are running and the ball looks like it'll fall just in front of you, pressing down will send your player on his feet to try to grab the ball. If you are running to catch the ball, pressing down will cause your player to stretch out his hand to snag the ball. LEFT Pressing the right stick left will cause your fielder to dive to the left. This is great if you are going for a line drive or a grounder. RIGHT Pressing the right stick right will cause your fielder to dive to the left. This is great if you are going for a line drive or a grounder. If you turned the Vector Line on, you'll see an icon appear, indicating where the ball will land. This is a large circle. Position your fielder in the middle of the circle, and he will be locked in place. You can move around in the circle, but you won't be able to leave. This allows you to concentrate on the ball, while still giving you enough room to move around to better catch the ball, minimizing any chance of an error. Just like pitching, a meter will show up when a fielder has the ball. This judges how fast and hard you throw the ball. As soon as the ball touches your glove, press one of the face buttons (A, X, Y, B) to choose a base and begin the meter (A = home, X = third, Y = second, B = first). The farther to the right the white line goes the harder the ball. When you reach the red area of the meter, this is the danger zone. The deeper in the red you go, the chances of your throw going away from the basemen or causing the basemen to leave the bag increases. If you are deep in the field, like close to the wall, you'll want to throw the ball to your cutoff man, because the chances of your throw reaching the target to get the out is low. The cutoff man will appear on the screen, and you press the Right Trigger to throw to him. Depending on the hit, you may know exactly where you want to throw. In cases like this, you can preload your throw. Press and hold on one of the face buttons as you are running to the ball. When you get to the ball, let go of the button, and your fielder will automatically throw it to the base you selected, without having to wait for the meter to appear. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4] Dynasty Mode | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Dynasty Mode is the core of the game. You take control of a major league team, it's two minor affilitates, and guide them to success or failure for up to 120 years. You control everything, from who will be the starting pitcher or who will be the fourth to bat. You also get to take control of the managerial aspects of the game. Negotiate contracts, sign free agents, send players down to the minors or call them up... it's all in your hands. From the game: You are about to take control of a Major League organization and begin a 120 year dynasty. Your front office will grade you against a series of 3 Year Contract Goals and 1 Year Stretch Goals which determine seasonal budget adjustments. Balancing your rosters, making effective trades, managing your minor league prospects, and maintaining Player Happiness and Team Chemistry will be the keys to success. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.1] New Dynasty Options | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| When beginning a new dynasty, you can configure several options. Most of these can be changed after, as well. The default choice is the first option listed here. User Profile - NAME This option allows you to select the profile to be associated with the dynasty. This is so you can save your MVP points, your game stats, etc. Fantasy Draft - NO, MLB, MLB/AAA, MLB/AAA/AA With fantasy draft turned on you choose the rosters by entering a draft with all the other CPU players. You and them take turns drafting players to your team. Draft Order - NO, 2003, RANDOM, USER 1ST This allows you to decide what order the draft will go in. Will you be the first team, will it be random, or will you use the same order as the 2003 baseball season? Difficulty - ROOKIE, PRO, ALL-STAR, MVP Choose the difficulty. This will apply to all games, including AAA and AA matches. Rookie is the easiest, and MVP is the hardest. Injuries - ON, MLB ONLY, OFF With injuries turned on, your players can get hurt in the game, both in the majors and minors. If you set it MLB ONLY, only your major league players can be injured. Suspension - ON, MLB ONLY, OFF With suspensions turned on, your players can be suspended for some reason, both in the majors and minors. If you set it to MLB ONLY, only your major league players can be suspended. Errors - ON, OFF With errors on, both you and the CPU have the potentially to drop a catched ball, or throw a ball way off target. DH Rule - AL ONLY, NL ONLY, BOTH, NONE DH Rule means "designated hitter". If you have this set to AL ONLY, it only applies to American League teams. NL ONLY applies to National League teams, and both applies to, well, both. Use Default Rosters - YES, NO When turned on, you will use the rosters that the game was programmed with, and those rosters are current as of January 15th, 2004. If turned off, you can use your custom made rosters (put A-Rod on the Marlins, if you want). Use Unlockable Players - NO, YES When turned on, any legendary players you unlocked can be used in your Dynasty, meaning you can once again have Babe Ruth play on the Yankees against Randy Johnson, if you want. Trade Deadline - ON, OFF When the trade deadline is turned on, you have a limited amount of time to trade players, after which you will be stuck with your lineup until the next season. CPU Initiated Trades - ON, OFF If this option is turned on, the computer may offer you trades or will offer you someone for a player you have on the trading block. When turned off, you have to do all the trading. Fair Trades - ON, OFF With fair trades on, you won't be able to trade a player with a rating of 70 for a player with a rating of 90. Leaving fair trades on makes the game seem more realistic. Budgets - ON, OFF With budgets turned on, you have a limited amount of points (which, in the game means cash) to sign players and negotiate contracts. This means you won't be able to sign a team full of 98 rated players, because you won't be able to afford all their salaries. Leaving budgets on makes the game seem more realistic. Rained Out Games - ON, OFF When turned on, some of your games may be canceled due to heavy rain. Of course, this only applies if you are playing in an open field, because a venue like the SkyDome doesn't really have rain concerns, does it? Team Chemistry Effect - ON, OFF When turned on, your players will have different moods and your team will have to work together. If a lot of your players are unhappy, they will make others unhappy, and your whole team chemistry will dwindle. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.2] MVP Inbox | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The MVP Inbox is your window into the entire league. You will receive e-mails on this screen, which will give you information on the team of your upcoming match, any injuries, staff or media reports. Read each message, then delete it. The most useful aspect of the Inbox is when you receive an e-mail about your next match. It contains information on the team you are facing, who the probable starter is, and other information. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.3] Scouting Report | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| You should get in the habit of checking the Scouting Report before every game. It gives information on the team you will be facing. Among the information is your record and the other team's record (overall and against each other). It shows the team chemistry, and the opposing team's pitching, batting, fielding and baserunning ratings. You will get information on who the game thinks will be the starting picture, including that pitcher's record, ERA, stamina, pitch types and the ratings of each pitch. The final bit of information is the lineup. It shows you who the starting lineup is for the opposing team, for both right and left handed pictures, with and without designated hitters. It also tells you the impact of the upcoming game, on a scale of one to ten, with ten being an important game. Not only does the Scouting Report give you information about your MLB team, but you can find the exact same info for both your AAA and AA teams. Using the Scouting Report can help you prepare for the upcoming match. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.4] Team Management | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is where the manager aspect of the game really comes into play. You, more or less, control your team's future here. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.4.1] Transactions | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Transactions is split into four categories. Trade Players Here is where you trade players on a one for one basis. You choose a player from your team, be it MLB, AAA or AA, and you can offer that player for one from a different team. The AI is fairly smart, so don't expect to get away with trading a pitcher with a 60 rating for one with a rating of 85. Edit Team Trading Block You can place many players on the trading block. This way, the CPU can see what you're willing to trade, and will offer you deals. For some players who are unhappy, placing them on the block may increase their mood. Search Trading Blocks Choose a player on your trading block, and you'll be taken to a screen where you can view other teams trading blocks, and if there is someone you like, offer the trade. Free Agents Look at all the free agents and decide to sign one if you like. At the bottom of this screen, you'll see your team's roster; the number of players you have (followed by how many are required), the number of pitchers you have (followed by how many are required), and how many points you have to spend. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.4.2] Rosters | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Rosters is split into nine categories. Depth Chart Bring up a list of your current roster chart and each player's position. By choosing a player, you have the option of trading him, placing him on the trade block, call him up (if he's a minor) or send him down (if he's a major), negotiate a new contract, change his batting order, or change his defensive alignment. Pitching Rotation Pitching Rotation allows you to change the rotation of pitchers. Duh. You can set what five pictures will be immediately available at the start of a game. Batting Order Similar to Pitcher Rotation, except you set the batting order for your team. Bring someone in from the bench or just re-arrange them. You can change the order four times; for games where you face a left-handed picture, a right- handed picture, and for those with and without DH. Defensive Alignment Change each player's defense alignment for the same type of games as I said above. Disabled List If you have an injured player, you can put him on the disabled list via this screen. There are three options; bench, 15 day disabled list and 60 day disabled list. Placing an injured player on the bench should only be done if you can't spare that player. Placing a player on the 15 day list should be done for minor injuries, while the 60 day list should be reserved for the major injruies. Suspensions View a list of all your players who have suspended. You'll see their position, their rating and how many games are left in their suspension. Call Ups/Send Downs From this screen you can send one of your pros down to the minors if he is playing badly, or call up a minor leaguer for a chance in the big time. Sometimes, sending an unhappy player to the minors may increase his mood, which will let you bring him back to the majors when he is happier. Create/Edit Player A fixture of every sports game, you can create a polygonal version of yourself and sign him to your team. CPU Optimize Rosters Allow the CPU to optimize your rosters for the best effect. This takes a lot of the fun out of managing your team, however, but if you aren't into all the micromanaging that MVP Baseball 2004 provides, then it's a good choice for you. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.4.3] Payroll | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Payroll allows you to renegotiate contracts with everyone of your seventy five players. Remember, you have a limited budget to work with, so don't go signing one expensive player for three years when two of your good ones will expire at the end of the season. At the bottom of the payroll screen you will get three tidbits of information. The first is your budget; this is how much money you have at the beginning of every season, and will increase or decrease depending on your manager rating. The second is payroll; this is how much of your budget you are spending on your players. The final one is bank; this is how much you have at the moment to sign or renegotiate with current players. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.5] Schedule | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The Schedule is one large calendar that shows games you've played and upcoming games. Each date is color coded to indicate if it's a home or road game; blue is home and green is road. Through the schedule, you can sim as many games as you want, without having to go one by one through "Play Today's Game". |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.6] Around the League | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Think of Around the League as a newspaper. You get news from throughout the whole organization, as well as standings (are you taking charge or are you pulling up the rear?) and statistics. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.6.1] Standings | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The Standings screen shows you exactly where you rank among the other teams in your division. You can check everything from your streak (hopefully winning, right?), to the results of just your last ten games, to how many runs you've scored and allowed. At the bottom of the standings screen is a listing called the Wild Card Race. These are the top teams that are vying for the Wild Card spot. The GB stands for "Games Behind". If it says 0.5, it means that team is 0.5 games behind the current wild card leader. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.6.2] Statistics | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The Statistics screen is separated into five categories. Batting Stats Batting stats allows you to view the stats of every batter from every team, be in yours, opponents, or some of the AAA or AA teams. There is a wealth of information to be had here. Pitching Stats Exactly like Batting Stats, except you view information on pitchers. Fielding Stats Fielding Stats allows you to see how your players are doing out in the field. Are they catching balls? Are they throwing wild shots? Are they missing popups? It's all here. Baserunning Stats How is your stealing? Do you constantly get tagged out? Can you manage a triple on what should've been a double? That information, and more, can be found here. League Leaders Find out who is leading the league in two categories; batting and pitching. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.6.3] League News | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This is the real newspaper part of Around the League. You can view injury reports, transactions, call ups/send downs, suspensions, Cy Young race and MVP race. You can view news from your team, opposing teams, or AAA and AA teams. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.7] Team Goals | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| When you start a new dynasty, you are presented with several team goals that are split into two separate categories; 3 Year Contract Goals and 1 Year Stretch Goals. Each goal is randomly generated. 3 Year Contract Goals are the most important and are ones you should strive for, or you could be in trouble. Not completing these goals results in a lower manager rating, and will mean you have less points to spend at the beginning of the next season. Some goal examples include: - Win 1 MVP Award - Win 140 MLB Road Games - Hit 600 HRs with MLB team 1 Year Stretch Goals aren't important, but they do help your manager rating and will slighty affect your budget for the next season. Some goal examples include: - Lead AAA in HR's (Indiv.) - Lead MLB in Shutouts (Indiv.) - Have Most Runs Scored For a complete listing of every team's goals, scroll to the end of this FAQ. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.8] Team Chemistry | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| *** Soon *** |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.9] Player Happiness | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| *** Soon *** |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [4.10] Game Sliders | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| *** Soon *** =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5] In-Game Options | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Besides the standard options, like audio and gameplay tuning, you can access two different options, one of which changes depending on if you're batting or pitching. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.1] Roster Options | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| If you're a pitcher, you'll have access to a variety of different options. Under Pitching/Defense, you'll see the following: Mound Visit Send the coach to visit the pitcher. Depending on the mood of the pitcher, why you're visiting, and the pitcher's overall happiness level, he will take the visit as a positive or negative reaction. A positive reaction will see his stamina increase slightly, while a negative reaction will either have no effect, or will decrease his stamina slightly. Pitcher Substitution Replace the pitcher with another one. This is useful for when your pitcher's stamina level has dropped and his throws are becoming too slow or too inaccurate. Change Defensive Alignment You can rotate the players position on the field. Swap the center fielder with the first baseman and see how they do. Defensive Substitution Swap a player on the field with a player from the bench. Good if you notice one of your men isn't doing too well. Warm Up Pitchers Before placing a new pitcher on the mound, you should send him to the bullpen by choosing this option, so that they'll be primed and ready when you need them. You can have a maximum of two pitchers warming up. You may also view your bullpen and see how your pitchers are doing, or view the opponent's bullpen to see who they have waiting to take over. ********** If you're a batter, you'll have access to similar options, but fewer. Under Batting/Baserunning, you'll see the following: Pinch Hit Change your current batter for another one. This is good if you know of a batter who will do well against the current pitcher. Pinch Run Only available if you have a runner on base, selecting pinch run will bring the runner in and replace him with someone else, preferably a faster player. This is useful if you need a quick win, and you have someone who may get to the plate faster. Warm Up Pitchers Same thing as the pitcher option. Just like the pitcher options, you can also view your bullpen and the opponent bullpen. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [5.2] Box Score | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The box score shows the current score of the game, in box format, from one to nine innings, as well as the runs, hits, and errors of both teams. Underneath the scorecard, you have a listing of everybody who has played in this game, their position, and what they've hit. Underneath the player listings, you will see a detailed list of batting, fielding, pitching and baserunning statistics. After all this, you get the same information again, except for the opposing team. This is a good way to see just how good you did, and what batters or pitchers did an outstanding job. Under all those stats, you'll find the stats for the pitchers of the game, for both you and your opponent. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [6] Complete Team Listing | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Here is a listing of every team, from the majors to the minors. These are the default ratings, so if you've been playing a Dynasty for a few years, they may, and probably will be, different. Why? Your player ratings adjust throughout the course of your dynasty. If your player keeps smacking those home runs, his batting may increase, while his throwing accuracy may decrease if he keeps throwing errors above the first baseman's head. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [8.1] MLB | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| These are player ratings for every player of every team in the MLB. Choose two teams, get the lineups the way you like, select your difficulty, select a stadium and day or night, and jump into the game. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [11.2] Home Run Showdown | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The Home Run Showdown pits you against a computer or human opponent in a race to hit the most runs. For every home run you hit, you get a point. If you swing and miss, or hit the ball foul, you lose points. The first batter to reach the target distance (1 mile, 3000 feet, 7500 feet or 10000 feet) wins. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [11.3] Pitcher Showdown | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Similar to Home Run Showdown, except you're the pitcher, and you have to strike out the batters. For every strike out you receive a point. If the batter hits a foul, it's considered a strike. If he hits the ball, you lose your current count. If he hits a home run, you lose one whole point (so if you're one point away from winning when he hits a homer, you'll be two points away). The first pitcher to get the set number of strike outs (3, 6 or 9) wins. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [11.4] Manager Mode | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Manager Mode is like a table top game. You select all the standard options, like the lineup, but you don't actually play the game. Everything takes place in a top down view of the field, showing the pitchers and batters at the bottom of the screen. You choose what you want your player to do (if you want to pitch to the batter like normal, you choose the text "Pitch Batter"). The AI does everything, and you're presented with the results in an easy to read format, and then you must choose what to do next. Do you hit the next batter? Do you walk him? Do you change your pitchers? It's all up to you. |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [11.5] Scenario Editor | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Scenario Editor allows you to set up specific situations for yourself. Do you want to have the New York Yankees behind by one at the bottom of the ninth with two outs, one man on base and Babe Ruth at back? With three runs needed for the win and the bases loaded, do you go for the grand slam, or attempt to get each runner in one by one? There are a ton of options you can configure for Scenario Mode. Choose the inning, what part of the inning (Top or Bottom), outs, the score for both the Home and Away team, who is at bat, who is on base, who is pitching, who is due up at the plate, and what the count is (strikes and balls). =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [12] Stadium Information | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Below is a listing of all the stadiums in the game, as well as their stats, such as attendance. ======================== === Regular Stadiums === ======================== AA Stadium One Open: 5 Apr, 2004 Team: Aeros Turf: Bluegrass Capacity: 12,000 Avg. My heart, I have found, Gets carved surely by the pound. God knows. I tried, Tried to hold you with all my might But time has won, And I could never be that strong. (Don't cry) I couldn't be that strong, (Don't cry) That used to be my favourite song. (Don't cry) Tears so bittersweet Fill my eyes whenever we meet, It's always bittersweet. I cut and I bleed. You seem to find that so hard to believe! That's just too, too bad. You could never touch the love that we had. (Don't cry) For the love we had, (Don't cry) Sometimes we try to take it back. A: Barry Bonds withdrew from the MLPBA licensing agreement (not the MLBPA itself). While Bonds is still part of the MLPBA, it means that companies can no longer use his likeness when they pay for the MLBPA license, as he's no longer part of it. To get him, a developer would not only have to pay him an additional fee, but they would also have to secure his permission. (thanks to Kozo Ota for clarifying this) Q: How do you charge the catcher? I always slide! A: To charge the catcher, don't press the right stick until you're almost in his face. If you press it too early, you'll only go into a slide, which is almost a guaranteed tag. Q: Where are the Spring Training games? A: Before you can play a spring training game, you have to play (or sim) through one complete season. At the end of the season (or playoffs, or World Series, if you make it), you will advance to the post season, and this is where you can play in spring training. Q: Are Spring Training games any different? A: Not really, no. The only difference is your player ratings can improve or degrade depending on their performance. If your team is the Toronto Blue Jays, and Carlos Delgado is constantly hitting popup fly's against a right-handed pitcher, his rating of 'Contact vs. RHP' may decrease. If he keeps hitting homers, it may increase. Have a question? E-mail it! =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [17] Team Goals and Budget | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| From my understanding, each team's goals remains the same year after year after year, and never change. Under this section, I will list each team and what the goals are for them, both Contractual and Stretch. Once I finish a year, if my goals do change, I'll be sure to update this. Underneath the goals you will find three additional stats; Team Budget, Team Payroll, Points Available (which is budget - payroll = bank). Update: While the goals remain similar, they increase in difficulty. If you have no problem winning 260 Total MLB Games, the next set of goals might tell you to win 300. If you're easily hitting .260 with your AAA team, you might have to hit .360 next year. Each EA Sports game you play is added to the bio, and the bio tracks playing time for each game, total playing time, major accomplishments (score four homers with one player), recent accomplishments (swept a rival team), and awards you a gamer level every so often. The more games you play, the more time you invest in them, the higher your gamer level. You get bonus points for winning games or doing something big, like a shutout. It also tells you the last time you played a game, the amount of games played, your win percentage, and when your next reward will be unlocked. You can view your stats for every game, whether you're playing that game or not. For example, if you want to see when you last played Madden, but you're in MVP, simply bring up the bio, scroll down to Madden, and check the stats. The following games utilize the bio: FIFA Soccer 2004 Fight Night 2004 Madden NFL 2004 MVP Baseball 2004 NASCAR Thunder 2004 NBA Live 2004 NCAA Football 2004 NCAA March Madness 2004 NHL 2004 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 =============================================================================== =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [A] Contact Information | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| To contact me, send an e-mail to the following address: jpaterson000 [at] msn [dot] com Replace [at] with @ and [dot] with the period. Please do not add me to your MSN Messenger list. All friend requests will be denied. When e-mailing me, include the name of the game, or an abbreviation of the game in the subject. Most other e-mails will probably end up not being read, and immediately deleted. Thank you. If your e-mail contains any of the following, I will not respond to it: - Help for something that's already covered in this FAQ; please look over it before e-mailing me - Help for something that has nothing to do with this game; do not ask me how to kill the final monster of a game if you're reading my MVP Baseball FAQ - Serial numbers, CD keys, registration codes, or where to find a pirated version If you need help with a technical problem, such as your game not loading or you're encountering errors, contact the developer and/or publisher of the game. I cannot help with technical problems. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [B] Webmaster Information | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Attention webmasters: You are allowed to host this document and display it without asking for prior permission.
