INTRODUCTION: The Messenger is Lara Croft meets “Orlando” meets "Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego". If that is your thing then you'll love this game. I, on the other hand, have never felt the urge to shoot myself in the head with a crossbow until I played The Messenger. So many hours wasted. The hero of the game, Morgan(a) Sinclair, is assisted by her mannish looks as she attempts to achieve her cherished goal of becoming the first woman to dress as a man in every historical era since the Black Death. The plot will be morbidly familiar to adventure game players. The hero of prophecy is sent on a quest by a wise old man to collect objects that could bring about the Apocalypse if they fall into the wrong hands, only to find out the old man is really a bad guy who uses the gullibility of the prophesied hero in order to carry out his fiendish plan to…surprise?…bring about the Apocalypse. Caution: This game’s ESRB rating of TEEN is justified more by the unending sexist commentary of the NPCs then by the violent crossbow killings of those same NPCs. The Messenger was released by DreamCatcher in February 2001. THE CONTROLS: - Solving the puzzles is not the difficult part of The Messenger, but finding the TINY, PRACTICALLY INVISIBLE INTERFACE ZONES IN ILLOGICAL PLACES that can be seen from one screen but not from another is both difficult and exhausting. I am willing to bet that most people who will use this cheat guide are confused because they cannot find an area on the screen to interact with, not because they don't know what to do with the items they have found. I have to admit that I spent hours looking for some interface zones before I found them. - The Messenger does not use a continuous environment that you freely move your character around in. You may only move through and interface with one screen at a time. Sometimes you can see an object from one screen, but you can only interface with it from another. To avoid confusion when you first enter a mission I will explain how to explore it by using DIRECTIONS such as go right, go left, go forward, turn around and go. These directions will help you find the proper screen on which to pick up an object or perform an action. To follow the directions, first use the mouse to move your character's perspective 90 degrees to the right or left, or 180 degrees to turn around, (forward is straight ahead). Second, move the mouse cursor around the screen until it becomes a directional arrow, then left-click to go in the direction I have suggested until you reach the next screen. Furthermore, there will be times when the cursor changes to a magnifying glass allowing Morgan to view something up close, simply left-click with the magnifying glass when I suggest you zoom in on something. When you are finished I will tell you to back up, do this by left-clicking on the screen with the u-turn mouse icon. - Once you have been to a room it appears active on the LOUVRE MAP in your inventory (To access it right-click and then left-click on the rook icon at the bottom of the screen. Change floors with the two arrow keys next to the number below the map. Display more of the map using the four arrow keys around the map itself). After you have explored all the rooms on the map I will refer to rooms you must return to by their names on the map screen so you can jump to them quickly by left-clicking on the room with the corresponding name and floor displayed on the map. Keep in mind each room may have several screens (vantage points from which you view and interact with the room) that I will move you through and describe once you jump back into a room using the map. - There is no way to sufficiently condemn the giant step backwards the developers of this game took when they designed its INVENTORY SYSTEM. Morgan is only allowed to hold 8 objects in her standard inventory and 4 quest objects in her reserve inventory. Scattered throughout each mission of the game are interlinked treasure chests that she stores her excess inventory in. I have played games with infinite inventory capacity and capacity based on the weight of the objects or the size of the objects, but the limitation to only eight objects (whether 8 sheets of paper or 8 tons of metal) is truly bizarre. The inventory screen is opened by right-clicking. Left-click to select objects and then to select the action keys on the inventory menu that allow you to use, examine, combine and separate objects. The switch at the bottom right corner allows you to close the inventory screen. During the game you will have to continually interface with the treasure chests to organize your items. I have tried to make this process as efficient as possible by making notes on what to TAKE OUT and PUT AWAY during different stages of the game. - You can SKIP CUT SCENES with the spacebar. - Esc activates the MAIN MENU. TIPS: - CHEAT. Do not make the same mistake I did searching each screen again and again until your eyes feel like they are bleeding. Please, let me help you. - Listen for HINT MUSIC; it plays when you have an object in your inventory that can interact with an object on the screen you are viewing. - If you are truly determined to do it yourself, scan your environment thoroughly, SEARCH EVERY SCREEN in a steady pattern, and don’t look only at clearly defined objects. Some interface zones have no clear boundaries or hints that tip you off as to where to start searching for them. - Contrary to what the instruction manual says, the DICTAPHONE contains no vital clues or hints. Don’t waste your time. - Use the Louvre Map to keep track of what ROOMS YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO and concentrate on finding ways into those rooms. SOLUTION: Modern Era: >From where you start, go up the escalator to your right, then forward, then forward again to approach the door. Look to your left and zoom in (left-click) on the control panel. Use the magnetic blue identity pass on the slot. (Here is how to access an inventory item using the blue pass as an example: Right-click to open the inventory, left-click on the object {the blue pass}, left-click on the hand icon {on left side}, left-click on off switch {on bottom right}, move the cursor over the object you want to interface with {the slot} and left-click to use). Go straight through the door you just opened. Go forward again, and ignore the camera cut scene. Go forward, then right, take the next passage forward and to the right. Turn right and you will see the Leo statue; zoom in and pick it up (left-click on it) for a ghostly cut scene. 1377: Go right, then look left and zoom in on the chest. TAKE OUT: Crossbow, bolts, knife. Right-click to open inventory, combine the crossbow and the bolts (left-click on crossbow, left-click on combine icon to the left, left-click on bolts, close inventory). Go left, then straight and to the left towards the white marks on the wall. Use the knife on the white marks to acquire saltpeter. Go up the steps to the right, go forward, zoom in on the chair to the right. Use the knife on the chair to split the fabric, then back up, turn around and go straight. Zoom in on the window to the right, use the knife on the window then zoom in again. Use the crossbow with bolt to kill the guard. Back up, then back up again, go right, go straight through the door, then up the stairs to the left. Go straight on the walkway, then zoom in on the chandelier to the right. Use your knife to cut the rope on the left. Go right, go straight down stairs, turn around and go straight, go straight again. Look at the floor to the left of the table in front of you, pick up the bronze key. Zoom in on the cabinet to the left of the door on your left, pick up the jug full of water. Back up, turn around and go straight behind the head table, left-click on the soldier to the left to take his uniform, go left back across the table, then exit through the door on the right. Go left, then straight, then use the bronze key on the door in front of you. Go straight, then go straight and to the left, towards the 5 barrels. Look down and slightly to the right, now pick up the bottle of alcohol. Go left, then zoom in on the trunk to the left, use the crossbow with bolt on the lock of the trunk, take the saffron, combine it with the alcohol to make red paste, then break apart the crossbow and bolt (right-click, select crossbow, left-click on separate icon beneath the combine icon) and close the inventory. Open the chest on your right. PUT IN: jug of water, saltpeter, bronze key, bolts. TAKE OUT: Hook, rope. Combine hook, crossbow and rope. Zoom in on window to right of chest. Use knife on window and zoom in again. Use hook launching crossbow on gazebo to the left. Go straight into gazebo, go right, pick rose to left, combine rose with red paste to make blue paste, go right, zoom in on people in distance. Use map to jump to Floor 0 Courtyard, (right-click, left-click on rook icon at bottom of the screen, left-click on destination). Separate hook launching crossbow. Go straight, use rope on well to left; view cut scene with alchemist. Pick up the magic formula of revelation on the stand to your right. Zoom in on the flask on the table to your left. Use the blue paste on the flask with the key in it, then pick up the small key for manuscript clasp. Back up, zoom in on skull over door to left, take small furniture key set with diamonds, back up, go through door beneath skull. Go left, go right, turn around and zoom in on fallen guard, take gold key. Use map to jump to Floor -1 low room. Go right and open chest on left. PUT IN: Crossbow, hook, gold key, knife. TAKE OUT: saltpeter, jug of water, torch. Use map to jump to Floor 0 Large King’s bedroom, zoom in on box with skull, use torch on skull. Go straight (slightly to the left of skull in box), zoom in on chair, zoom in on paper, use magic formula for revelation on the paper, back up turn around and go straight. Zoom in on cabinet to right, get aconite flower bottle, combine aconite flower bottle with saltpeter to make yellow seeds. Back up, go straight toward fireplace on left, turn around and zoom in on lock on bench, use small furniture key on lock, left-click on the wooden bar behind the lock. Back up, use jug of water on fireplace to left, step forward onto logs, look up and to the left, use rope on edge of grate. Look down, pick up stool. Go right, then straight and to left toward armoire. Open armoire and pick up incense, combine incense with yellow seeds to make red seeds, back up. Use the stool on the square of yellow tiles on the floor in front of the armoire. Step up onto stool and use torch on top of armoire, pick up silver key, back up. Go through curtained door behind stool. Go straight and receive instructions from the King, pick up royal manuscript, turnaround and go straight twice to exit the library. Zoom in on chest to right. PUT IN: magic formula of revelation, small furniture key, torch, red seeds. TAKE OUT: crossbow, hook, gold key. Combine crossbow, hook and rope. Turnaround and go straight into library. Go straight twice then turn around and zoom in on the book on the stand. Use small key for manuscript on book, zoom in on text for a hint about the zodiac symbols. Back up, then look up and slightly to the left, then zoom in on three zodiac symbols high on the wall. Press the right symbol (goat), then the left symbol (man), then the center symbol (fishes). Pick up the ivory plate. Combine the ivory plate and the royal manuscript to acquire the planetary symbol code. Record the symbols in order starting from top left to the bottom right. There are 7 planetary symbols mixed in with a message, write them down carefully. Use the map to jump to Floor 0 Courtyard. Go left, then straight, then look far up and to the right to find a raised walkway. Use the hook launching crossbow on the walkway, then turn right and zoom in on the door. Press the buttons in the sequence of planetary symbols you decoded from the royal manuscript, if you still can’t figure it out try this sequence: press the symbol in the outermost ring, then the symbol in the third ring from the center, the symbol in the second ring from the center, the sixth ring from the center, the innermost ring, the fifth ring from the center and finally the fourth ring from the center. Use the silver key on the lock, go straight, zoom in on the chest in the first alcove to the right of the alcove in front of you. PUT IN: decoded royal manuscript. TAKE OUT: gas mask, red seeds. Enter alcove with the pyramid domed chest two alcoves to the right of the chest you just accessed. Zoom in on the pyramid domed chest to the right and use the gold key on it, take ruby from the scepter. Back up, go right, enter alcove on left with tapestry, zoom in on tapestry to left, use ruby in the right eye of the horse/lion creature. Back up, go left, zoom in on the throne to the left, open the armrest on the left, pick up the Daemon statue. When you close the inventory screen a guard will be ordered to arrest you. QUICKLY enter the first alcove to the right of the guard, go through the door on the right (opposite the tapestry). Turn around and zoom in on the fire, use the red seeds on the fire. QUICKLY use the gas mask. Your ghost mentor sends you on your next mission. 1610: Pick up the antimony tablet below the pillar to your left. Go right, zoom in on the chest to your left. TAKE OUT: rope, hook, crossbow, torch, knife. Combine hook, bow and rope. Go left, go straight, exit through the window on your left. Turn around and pick up the rock to your left on the ground. Turn around and use rock on cart to right of guard. Go left, zoom in on window for a tortuous cut scene. Use knife on window, enter window, go straight, zoom in on door to right, left-click to close window, pick up key for service lift. Back up, turn around and go straight across the room to the armoire, open the armoire to your right, take dress, use torch on darkened bottom of armoire and pick up side board key. Back up, turn around and look down, zoom in under table and take gun. Back up, go straight across table and exit window to courtyard. Go straight, then go straight but bear to the left of the barrels, then go straight again. Turn around and zoom in on barrels, take hemlock, back up, go left, enter door. Go right, enter alcove to left of statue pillars, search floor beneath the window to find a loose brown tile and use it. Turn around, look up, use hook launching crossbow on raised platform above pillars. Turnaround and enter secret passage on your right. After the cut scene with the alchemist, zoom in on the flask on the table to your left. Use the antimony tablet and then the hemlock on the steaming cauldron, pick up the green potion (neutralizing solution). Back up, pick up the general purpose formula to your right. Use the map to jump to the Floor 0 Caryatid room. Go straight, then straight again to see a cut scene where the Queen commits a crime against Christianity. Talk to the Queen on your right. Go right, use the sideboard key on the door to your left. Go up the stairs to the right, turn around and zoom in on the service lift to the right of the steps. Use the key for the service lift on the service lift, use the lever, then take the basket of laundry. Go left, use green potion on guard, zoom in on bed to left, pick up signet-ring and back up. Go left, zoom in on closed shutters to the left, left-click on shutters to open them. Zoom in on window, left-click on the right of the screen, use hook launching crossbow on window in front of you. Use map to jump to Floor 1 King’s bedroom . Zoom in on chest to the left. PUT IN: torch, sideboard key, key for service lift, knife, gun. TAKE OUT: gas mask, bolt. Separate the hook launching crossbow, combine crossbow with bolts. Turn around and zoom in on cabinet to your left. Left click to open cabinet, zoom in on top right-hand drawer, take royal note revealing secret passage, memorize it or make a personal note about it. Back up, zoom in on middle right-hand drawer, take holy water. Back up twice, open chest to the right. PUT IN: holy water, hook, rope, royal note revealing secret passage. TAKE OUT: knife. Use map to jump to Floor 1 Library, exit through cabinet doors behind you. Pick up hammer and chisel to your left. Use map to jump to Floor 1 King’s Portrait gallery. Go right, go straight, zoom in on chest to left, take log, back up, use log on fire to the right, zoom in on fireplace equipment to right, take tongs, back up, turn around and zoom in on back of chair then back up. Go straight (slightly to left of chair). Look left, zoom in on right-hand portrait of Louis XI; use signet-ring on H at bottom of portrait, back up. Go right, look left, zoom in on right-hand portrait of Francois I; use signet-ring on H at bottom of portrait, back up. Zoom in on left-hand portrait of Charles VIII; use signet-ring on H at bottom of portrait, back up. Go right, look left, zoom in on right-hand portrait of Francois II; use signet-ring on H at bottom of portrait, cut scene of secret door opening. Go right, go straight, enter passage on right, use general purpose formula on stone door in front of you. Go straight twice, go left under scaffold, zoom in on fabric to left, use knife on fabric, use crossbow with bolt on guard in the distance; watch cut scene with priest. Zoom in on purple eagle to left, use Daemon statue on niche. QUICKLY use gas mask. Watch cut scene with young King, zoom in on red eagle to the right, pick it up. Back up, go left, go straight, go straight and to the right, turn left and go up the scaffold. Go left, turn around and look up at picture of bull on ceiling, zoom in and use hammer and chisel, pick up bull shaped zodiacal key. Back up, go straight, go down scaffold to right, go right, go right, go left, zoom in on tapestries to the right. Left click on each tapestry until they present the same picture, a man with a pole slung over his shoulder bearing dead birds. When both tapestries are the same a panel opens to reveal the year 1553. Use the map to jump to Floor 0 cup-bearer’s room. Open chest in front of you. PUT IN: hammer and chisel, gas mask, signet-ring, knife, crossbow with bolt, general purpose formula. TAKE OUT: holy water, magic formula of revelation, gun. Go right, use holy water on woman on table to right, turn around and zoom in on window, take books. Back up, go left, use books on floor beneath contraption to right of inventory chest. Climb books, take missive, combine missive with magic formula of revelation, use map to jump to Floor 0 Caryatid room. Go right, turn around and zoom in on tomb, use tongs on scepter, a cut scene shows the tomb fighting back, pick up the scepter. Use map to jump to Floor 1 King’s bedroom, Go left, use missive on young King to right. Jump to Floor 0 small ground floor gallery. Go left, zoom in on first bench to your right, pick up sketches and examine them. Back up, go left, go straight, zoom in on guard to right, take powder and then take lead bullets, combine gun with bullets and powder to create the loaded gun. Jump to Floor 1 King’s Bedroom, go left, zoom in on top clock face to right. Use the two small dials below and to the right and left of the clock face to set the time to 1:55 (click left dial 1 time, click right dial 11 times), then use the scepter on the small dark spot between the two dials. Back up, zoom in on lower clock face to right. Use bull shaped zodiacal key on dark box in the center of the clock face. Press 4 times above the bull’s head when the cursor turns into an up arrow to set the zodiac dial to Aries. Press on the top edge of each of the number plates beneath the bull key to set the year to 1553. A drawer opens, take the bull. Use the map to jump to the courtyard, a cut scene shows a pursuit has begun, go straight and slightly to the left, use the gun on the barrels to the right. 18th Century: Go right, zoom in on chest to left. TAKE OUT: crossbow, rope, hook, bolts. Combine crossbow, rope and hook. Go left, go straight, enter alcove straight ahead (slightly to the left), pick up the copper wire. Turn around and go straight, go right and exit through window. Go straight, then straight again while bearing to the left of the ruined building. Go right and speak to the prostitute on your left. Take the clothes off the back of the wagon, then take the well-lined purse to the right of the wagon. Go left, turn around and zoom in on the ruined building, use the hook launching crossbow on the top of the wall. Left-click on the alchemist in the distance, then zoom in on the cabinet to the left of the alchemist and take the magic formula revealing some of Anselme’s basic secrets. Separate the hook launching crossbow, combine the crossbow and bolts. Open the left-hand drawer and take the necklace. Back up and go through the door on the left. Turn around and look up, zoom in on the gaping hole in the roof, now use the crossbow with bolt to shoot the metal rod on top of the roof. Back up, turn around and zoom in on the pile of rubbish straight ahead to the left, pick up the zinc tile. Back up, exit ruined building through the second door to the right of the rubbish pile. Go straight but bear to the left, now zoom in on the man to your left, give him the well-lined purse. Turn around and exit this room, go straight, then straight and to the left of the ruined building, turn right and pick up the copper ridge pole to your right. Use the map to jump to Floor -1 low room. Open chest to the right. PUT IN: copper ridge pole, copper wire, hook, rope, crossbow with bolt, zinc tile. TAKE OUT: general purpose formula and magic formula for revelation. Use the map to jump to Floor 0 Caryatid room. Turn around, zoom in on box with scrolls, pick up the opera score, back up and go left. Go straight up the steps, go right, then go through the door on the left. Go straight through the next door, zoom in on the cart to the left and take the Champagne glass. Combine the necklace with the Champagne glass. Exit this room through the door on the left, go through the next door, offer Champagne with necklace to woman on sofa. Zoom in on the table to your left, take the Heart-shaped key. Back up, turn around, go straight through next two doors. Turn around and zoom in on the chest of drawers, use the Heart-shaped key on the middle drawer on the left side and take the fancy dress. Back up, turn around and use the opera score on the harpsichord. After a long-winded cut scene zoom in on the table to the left of the harpsichord and take the key to the library. Back up, exit this room through the first set of doors to your right (these are double doors that are dark brown). Pick up the crank on the bottom of the painting to your right, turn around and zoom in on the cherub. Use the general purpose formula on the tablet the cherub has to its left, then pick up the flask full of acid. (At this point Anselme’s basic secrets temporarily disappear for some reason). Use the map to jump to Floor 0 ground floor service area (small room near Tribunal). Climb stairs to the right, zoom in on cabinet to left, use flask full of acid on door knobs then left-click to open cabinet. Take the sulphate flask (second bottle from the left on the inner shelf of the cabinet). Open the center drawer of the cabinet and take both the sheet of zinc and the sheet of copper. Back up, go through the door to the right of the cabinet, zoom in on the generator to your left, use the crank on the wooden stand of the generator and pick up the Leyden jar to the right. Back up, zoom in on glass book cabinet to left (in back corner of room), use key to library on door knobs of glass cabinet, take expedition notes. Combine expedition notes with magic formula of revelation and review the result. Back up, zoom in on the second glass cabinet to the left of the cabinet you were just inspecting, left-click on the door knobs and take the memorandum on electricity, then review it. Back up and turn around, zoom in on the table with two tanks on it. Use the sulphate flask on the empty tank to the left, then use the sheet of zinc on the left hook of the yellow tank and the sheet of copper on the right hook of the yellow tank. Use the map to jump to Floor 0 Diane’s room, turn around and zoom in on the door straight ahead and to the left. Use the Leyden jar in the space between the two circular knobs, then left-click on the door, go left, pick up the step ladder on your right, go left, enter the door on the right, go left, and go straight toward the steps on your right. Enter the door on the right and left-click on the sculptor. Listen carefully as the sculptor requests that you steal a painting for him. Use the map to jump to Floor 0 square room. Go left, go straight toward the door to the left of the stairs, go to the desk on the right and pick up the book explaining the paintings and examine it. #18, the painting of Christophe Allegrain is the one the sculptor mentioned. Back up, go right, use the step ladder on the ground in front of the wall straight ahead of you (the correct wall to place the step ladder in front of is the one with a very large rectangular painting with a smaller circular painting beneath it; this wall is directly to the left of the one door on the wall with three windows). At the top of the step ladder take the painting all the way to the top and left on the wall. Back up, use the map to jump to Floor 1 Apollo’s gallery, zoom in on the painter to the left, left-click on him and then give him the painting of Allegrain. After the touch up, take the painting and back up, go left, then straight, then zoom in on the chest at the end of the hall. PUT IN: step ladder, explanation of pictures, key to library, Leyden jar, memorandum on electricity. TAKE OUT: gas mask, copper ridge pole. Use the map to jump to floor 0 Sculptor’s workshop. Go straight, pick up the bag of coal on the right, turn around and go straight, turn around and enter the door on the right. Give the painting of Allegrain to the sculptor, then give the revealed expedition notes to him. Watch as he makes the mold. Turn around, take the mallet off the shelf above the door, then zoom in on the cabinet to the left of the door and take the pewter crockery. Back up, turn around and use the bag of coal on the second-to-the-left kiln door. A cut scene shows that Morgan must now work under pressure. Use the crockery and the copper ridge pole in the box above the kiln door you filled with coal. After a smoky cut scene QUICKLY use your gas mask. Use the mallet to break the mold and then take the Daemon statue. Turn around and exit this room, zoom in on the chest to your right in the hall. PUT IN: mallet, gas mask, expedition notes. TAKE OUT: zinc tile, copper wire. Use the map to jump to Floor 1 Science Academy. Zoom in on the table with two tanks to your left. Use the statue of the Daemon on the left hook of the blue tank, then use the zinc tile on the right hook of the blue tank, then use the copper wire on the far left corner of the blue tank and watch the statue get charged. Take the statue. When you exit your inventory you see the sculptor menacingly approach you. QUICKLY back up, zoom in on the fireplace to the right, use the general purpose formula on the fireplace and escape. Oh what a shock, everything Morgan has done up to this point has been in the service of evil, kind of like us playing this game. Back in the Modern Era: Go straight, zoom in on the chest to the left; TAKE OUT: crossbow, bolts, magic formula of revelation, general purpose formula, formula revealing Anselme’s basic secrets. Combine crossbow and bolts. Go left, go straight through arch, use the crossbow with bolt on the lock of the gate to the right. Turn around and go through the arch on the right, zoom in on the pedestal to your left, use the Aquila statue on the pedestal. Back up and zoom in on the pedestal to your left, use the Daemon statue on it. Back up, go left, zoom in on the pedestal to the right, use the Taurus statue on it. Back up, zoom in on the pedestal to your left, use the Leo statue on it. A cut scene reveals the depths of stupidity and murder into which Morgan has fallen, now she must set things right. HURRY, this portion of the game seems to be on a timer. Back up, go left, go straight through the arch, zoom in on the alcove to the left of the gate. Use the magic formula of revelation on the patch of irregular stone on the floor of the alcove. When the tomb is revealed use the general purpose formula to open it. Take the fibula in the crypt, now combine the fibula with the formula revealing Anselme’s basic secrets (finally a use for it) and Morgan heads back in time again. 1317: Zoom in on the chest to the right; TAKE OUT: crossbow, bolts, knife. Combine crossbow and bolts. Zoom in on the second window to your left, then use the knife on the right side of the window. Finally, use the crossbow with bolt on the man tied to the stake. You’ve won.
