Introduction 2. Job System Explanation 3. Tip for Easy Ability Points 4. Jobs and Abilities =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~INTRODUCTION~~ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This guide is a reference guide for how to use the jobs and abilities system in Final Fantasy V. It was written using the PAL version of Final Fantasy Anthology. Since I know that many people seem to struggle with the job system in this game, especially if they are not used to playing RPGs, I decided to assemble this guide whilst working on a mammoth full walkthrough for the PAL release of Final Fantasy Anthology. USING THIS GUIDE ---------------- What follows is a list of the jobs available in the game together with all the abilities which can be learned for each. Relevant lists for the jobs are also included below each one. To skip to the job you wish to read about, simply hold down the CTRL key and press F, then type in the name of the job you want to read about. This will take you to the desired section. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~JOB SYSTEM EXPLANATION~~ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Final Fantasy V includes the Job System. This enables you to fully develop your characters in any way you choose. Fighting enemies not only gives you EXP (experience points, for levelling up), but ABP - Ability Points. These are used to teach your characters new skills in relation to their currently equipped job. The points will be added to the total for the job which is equipped on the character at the time of battle. Your character, upon gaining ABP, will learn skills. There will be an alert at the end of a battle to tell you when you have learned a skill. There are two different types of ability. Those with a ! before them indicate that this is a command ability. This is an action which can be performed in battle, for instance, !White is a White Mage ability which must be equipped to a character in order to be used. You can only equip abilities which have already been learned, unless you are using the job for which it is the default ability. For example, if you have not learned the !White ability for a character, but that character is a White Mage, the !White command will still be available in battle because it is the default ability. Once it has been learned, it will become available for use by that character no matter what job the character has. The second type of ability is a non-command ability. This type has no ! before it in the menu. This is an ability which does not appear as a command in battle and works more as a type of skill which you can equip to your character. For example, the Monk ability "Barefist" is not a command - rather, it is a skill which will give your character an additional chracteristic - in this case, increased attack power. In the Ability screen within the menu, you will find that there are two slots available for abilities to be equipped into. If a job is currently designated to that character, the first will be the default ability which comes as part of that job. This cannot be changed. The second slot is available for you to select whichever ability you please. Note that when you have learnt all the available abilities for a particular job, your character will become a Master of that job. At this point, you should equip a new job to the character in order to get the most from the game. Once different jobs have been mastered, the "Bare" job will gain all of the non- command abilities from that job as default. You will also be able to equip any 2 command abilities you please. The key to understanding is to experiment. At first, it can seem quite tricky, but once you get the hang of it, you'll realise how easy it is to customise your characters. This is a very strategic element of the game. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~TIP FOR EASY ABILITY POINTS~~ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= You'll be needing a huge amount of ability points to master all the jobs in this game, and many of the jobs are simply too good NOT to master! Regular random encounter enemies don't give you too many points, and it can be rather infuriating to try to build up your points through this method alone, so here I have provided a tip for building up points in a hurry. During your time in the second world, you will encounter a place called Val Castle. At your first time there you will not be able to do this, but when you go back after Kelb, you can. You can also access this area whilst in World 3 as well, by going through the caves near Jachol. Go to Val Castle and buy as many "Soft" items as you can at the shop there. Walk down into the basement and you'll come to a room which is pale blue in colour and square. Walk around in this room and you will encounter lots of RockStatues. These are incredibly easy to beat and will give you 4AP per group of 2 and 8AP per group of 5. All you have to do to kill them is have your characters use a Soft on each RockStatue - since these are stone enemies, they will immediately cast Dark Returns and die. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ~~JOBS AND ABILITIES~~ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= KEY --- ! in front of a named ability signifies that this is a command ability - that selecting this ability will cause an executable command to be listed for use in battle. Eq at the start of an ability shows that this will allow you to equip a certain type of weapon or armour regardless of the job class that you are currently using for that character. KNIGHT ------ Knights have strong physical attack and defense. They can equip shields and are therefore evasive. This is a good job for a strong character with high HP due to its "Cover" ability. This job can be particularly effective when used in conjunction with the !White ability - as Knights evade a good percentage of attacks, they are generally more likely to survive long enough to revive KOed characters. The abilities learned from using this job are not brilliant, it has to be said, but in principle this is a good starting job to use for a physically strong character, particularly whilst your mages are still learning their abilities and are comparatively weak. This job is one of the first batch to be obtained - at the Wind Shrine. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ Cover 10 Knight protects allies who are close to KO !Guard 30 Effective defence against physical attacks 2 Handed 50 Hold sword using 2 hands for stronger attacks EqShield 100 Equip a shield regardless of current job EqArmour 150 Equip armour regardless of current job EqSword 350 Equip sword regardless of current job MONK ---- Monks are very strong fighters. They need no weapon, and attack twice each turn. They also have high HP and will counter attack too. This is a very useful early job to learn. The !Chakra command is brilliant early in the game, to use when fighting bosses whom you may find quite tough. It means that your best attackers (and Monks are brilliant attackers before you get the later jobs) can heal themselves, and the fact that this ability will cure the Blind status is all the better - there's no use attacking when you can't see what you're attacking, and Blind means that a high number of your attacks will miss! This job is obtained in the first batch at the Wind Shrine. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Store 15 Store attack for next turn for double damage. Barefist 30 Use attack power of monk when have no weapons. !Chakra 45 Cure blind and poison and heal small HP. Counter 60 Counter-attacks regardless of current job. HP + 10% 100 Max HP rises by 10% HP + 20% 150 Max HP rises by 20% HP + 30% 300 Max HP rises by 30% THIEF ----- Thieves have high agility and can attack with longer range weapons. They are useful for finding secret passageways and preventing back attacks. When you have a thief in your party, you will be able to see all hidden passageways. It is a good idea to change a character into a thief when in a town or other area which involves buildings. If there is a chance of there being an enemy encounter though, then it might be a better idea to just do the change in each room to see if you can see a passage, and then change back immediately. That said, learning the !Mug command is extremely useful, particularly if you are a completist. You should learn this as early as possible so that you always have the option of equipping the ability. Mug is better than Steal because you will do damage to the enemy at the same time. This job is acquired at the Wind Shrine with the first batch. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ Secret 10 See hidden passageways. !Flee 20 Escape from enemy encounters. Dash 30 Hold circle button down to run. !Steal 50 Use Steal command in battle. Caution 75 Prevents back attacks. !Mug 150 Steal and attack at same time. Footwork 300 Speed of a thief regardless of current job. BERSERKER --------- Very strong physically, a Berserker will always be berserk in battle, with an attack each round that you cannot control. However, these attacks will be incredibly powerful. I have to say that this job is, in my view, absolutely useless. You will not have any control over this character in battle and this can be very difficult at times - such as when the rest of your characters are KOed, your berserker has low HP, and instead of being able to do something useful like use an emergency elixir or similar, all you can do is sit back and watch him hit the opponant. In fact, against enemies that counter with powerful magics and so on, it is downright dangerous. Be very careful about when you use this job. This is obtained in the second batch of jobs at Walz Tower. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ Berserk 100 Character always berserk in battle. EqAxe 400 Character can equip axes regardless of job. LANCER ------ The Lancer is a powerful attacker, using dragon-fighting methods to kill his enemies with strong attacks, using spears. This is effective when coupled with Ninja's 2 Sword ability, as then 2 lances can be equipped to deal twice the damage when using the !Jump command. One of my favourite jobs, this has a wide variety of uses when coupled with other jobs and abilities. Aside from the above, you could also try giving the !White command to a Lancer, or the !Lance command to a white mage. This will give you the opportunity to drain MP from enemies to keep your own MP high enough to keep using magic in long fights without having to dip into your stock of Ether. Same with !Black. This supremely useful job is obtained at the end of World 1, at the Floating Ruins. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Jump 50 Use in battle for a damaging attack that does not miss. !Lance 150 Use in battle to drain HP and MP from enemy. EqLance 400 Character can equip spear regardless of current job. NINJA ----- A fast fighter who can attack using 2 equipped weapons each turn. Ninjas can also throw items, and take the first turn in battle. Many people see this job as a mere upgrade of Monk, but that does not do it justice. With some very useful abilities, you'll want to master Ninja quickly. The !Twin ability is very handy to have in difficult battles, and the !Throw ability is REALLY good. Shruikens are relatively easy to obtain, and along with any weapons that you don't feel like keeping, you can deal a lot of damage to bosses this way. 2 Sword is also useful, and is good when coupled with the other physical attack jobs for double the damage. This is obtained at the end of the Fire Ship section, when you are back at Karnak Castle. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Dustb 10 Create smokescreen, thus escaping fast. !Twin 30 Create second image of character to draw enemy attacks. FirstAtk 50 Attack enemies first. !Throw 150 Throw items in battle to damage enemy. 2 Sword 450 Equip 2 weapons regardless of current job (atk twice). SAMURAI ------- Strong and evasive of physical attacks. Uses Katana. This job is particularly useful for the !$Toss command, which deals damage in battle dependent on how much GP you currently have, although GP is lost to deal the damage. This is a very handy job, particularly if you have plenty of GP. !$Toss hits all enemies and is great for those boss battles where you have multiple enemies to deal with, particularly the Seal Guardians near the end of the second World, at Moore Forest. This job is obtained at the Floating Ruins. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !SSlap 10 Paralyze enemy with attack. !$Toss 30 Throw Gil at enemy to attack, but money lost. Swordgrab 60 Block attacks with sword. EqKatana 180 Equip Katana regardless of current job. !FDraw 540 Fast attack on all enemies - sometimes death. HUNTER ------ Uses animals to help the party. Can attack from the back row with same effect. !SShot command is useful as a secondary ability for a powerful character with the best weapons (particularly when coupled with Ninja's 2 Swords ability). If you use the 2 Sword ability, you will attack the enemy 8 times with !SShot. Certainly worth having, yes? Hunters should always be used on the back row, as their weapons are long range. The !Critt command can be learnt by the Hunter job class. The types of creatures that are summoned depend primarily on the character's level, rather than on the usual factors such as learnt ability, environment etc. As you level up, more critters will become available to you, and the choice of critter used in battle will become wider. However, they are still used randomly. This can be useful in moderately easy dungeon areas when you have levelled up a little. This job is obtained when on Crescent Isle, in the Black Chocobo Forest. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Critt 15 Summon animal to help in battle. !Aim 45 Attack with increased hit rate. EqBow 135 Equip bow regardless of current job. !SShot 405 Attack 4 times but with half strength. List of all available Critters: ---------------------|------------------------------------------------------- | CRITTER | EFFECT | |---------------------|-------------------------------------------------------| | Squirrel | Attacks an enemy. Very low level attack. | | Bee Swarm | Attacks all enemies. Low level attack. | | Nightingale | Heals all party members a little. | | Tree Squirrel | "The enemy is distracted" (in the words of the game). | | Falcon | Moderate damage on enemy, relating to enemy's HP. | | Skunk | Inflicts Dark and Poison status on enemy. | | Wild Boar | Higher level attack on enemy. | | Unicorn | Restores the party's HP and MP. | | Rabbit | Increases one ability for all characters. | ---------------------|------------------------------------------------------- SORCERER -------- Uses magic to enhance attacks from the sword. Magic lasts until the end of battle or until Dispel is cast. This can increase the power of attacks, but you will need to ensure that you get the type of magic you use right, or else you'll be stuck with a useless character for the rest of the battle if you don't have Dispel! The Magiwall ability is not good if you prefer to heal your low HP characters with magic rather than items. You should bear this in mind. The !Sword commands are all followed by a number. This relates to the maximum level of magic that the Sorcerer can use. Only magics which have been obtained can be used regardless of this level. This job is acquired at Walz Tower. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ Magiwall 10 Magic barrier cast when low HP. !Sword1 20 Allows level 1 sword magic. !Sword2 30 Allows level 2 sword magic. !Sword3 50 Allows level 3 sword magic. !Sword4 70 Allows level 4 sword magic. !Sword5 100 Allows level 5 sword magic. !Sword6 400 Allows level 6 sword magic. List of all Sword magic types: -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ | LEVEL | NAME | MP COST | WHAT IT DOES | |-------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------| | 1 | Bolt | 2 MP | Use weak bolt elemental sword attacks | | 1 | Fire | 2 MP | Use weak fire elemental sword attacks | | 1 | Ice | 2 MP | Use weak ice elemental sword attacks | | 2 | Mute | 1 MP | Inflict Mute status on enemy | | 2 | Poison | 1 MP | Damage using Poison and inflict status | | 2 | Sleep | 2 MP | Inflict Sleep status on enemy | | 3 | Bolt2 | 5 MP | Use medium bolt elemental sword attacks | | 3 | Fire2 | 5 MP | Use medium fire elemental sword attacks | | 3 | Ice2 | 5 MP | Use medium ice elemental sword attacks | | 4 | Bio | 3 MP | Use stronger poison attack | | 4 | Break | 8 MP | Inflict Stone status on enemy | | 4 | Drain | 6 MP | Sorcerer's attacks absorb HP | | 5 | Bolt3 | 15 MP | Use strong bolt elemental sword attacks | | 5 | Fire3 | 15 MP | Use strong fire elemental sword attacks | | 5 | Ice3 | 15 MP | Use strong ice elemental sword attacks | | 6 | Aspil | 1 MP | Absorb MP from target | | 6 | Flare | 30 MP | Cause huge damage to target | | 6 | Holy | 10 MP | Cause sacred damage to target | -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ WHITE MAGE ---------- Uses curative and status magic to heal party and disadvantage enemy. Strong magic power, poor attack and defense. The best way to use this job is to get the job mastered as early in the game as you can and then use the !White command as a secondary ability of another, more powerful job. Otherwise you could find your White Mage runs into trouble very easily. White Mages should always be on the back row of battle. White magic is obtained from magic shops and side quests during the game. The most useful white magic - Holy - is obtained in World 3 by going to the Fork Tower near Crescent Town. The numerical values after each instance of !White in the ability list below relates to the maximum level of magic which a character with that ability will be able to use. Although you purchase magic, you cannot use them until you have the corresponding ability. White magic is extremely useful, not just for healing your characters and inflicting negative statuses on enemies, but for the "Holy" spell obtained later in the game, which deals extremely good damage onto most enemies. This job is obtained at the Wind Shrine. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !White1 10 Allows level 1 white magic. !White2 20 Allows level 2 white magic. !White3 30 Allows level 3 white magic. !White4 50 Allows level 4 white magic. !White5 70 Allows level 5 white magic. !White6 100 Allows level 6 white magic. MP + 10% 300 Raises max MP by 10% List of all White Magic types: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | LEVEL | NAME | MP COST | WHAT IT DOES | |-------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------| | 1 | Antdot | 2 MP | Cures Poison Status | | 1 | Cure | 4 MP | Heals small amount of HP to character | | 1 | Scan | 1 MP | Discover enemy HP and weakness | | 2 | Mini | 5 MP | Inflicts or removes "Mini" status | | 2 | Mute | 2 MP | Inflicts "Silence" status on enemy | | 2 | Protes | 3 MP | Raise character's defense against phys atk | | 3 | Cure 2 | 9 MP | Heals medium amount of HP to character | | 3 | Muddle | 4 MP | Inflicts "Confuse" status on enemy | | 3 | Raise | 29 MP | Revives KOed character with small HP | | 4 | Blink | 6 MP | Creates an illusion to draw enemy attacks | | 4 | Esna | 10 MP | Cures most negative statuses | | 4 | Shell | 5 MP | Raise character's defense against magic atk | | 5 | Berserk | 8 MP | Inflicts "Berserk" status on enemy | | 5 | Cure 3 | 27 MP | Heals all HP to character | | 5 | Reflect | 15 MP | Reflects magic attacks back to enemy | | 6 | Arise | 50 MP | Revives KOed character with full HP | | 6 | Dispel | 12 MP | Remove magic effects from ally or enemy | | 6 | Holy | 20 MP | Damage enemies with sacred power | -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ BLACK MAGE ---------- Use attack and status magic against enemy. Strong magic power, poor attack and defense. This job should be mastered as early in the game as possible in order to provide you with the option of giving the !Black command ability to one of your characters rather than having to use a Black Mage to avoid the problems relating to defense. Black magic types are obtained by purchasing them from magic shops and doing side quests. The most useful is Flame, which is acquired by completing the Fork Tower side quest in world 3. This is situated near Crescent Town. The numerical values after each instance of !Black in the ability list below relates to the maximum level of magic which a character with that ability will be able to use. Although you purchase magic, you cannot use them until you have the corresponding ability. This job is obtained at the Wind Shrine. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Black1 10 Allows level 1 black magic. !Black2 20 Allows level 2 black magic. !Black3 30 Allows level 3 black magic. !Black4 50 Allows level 4 black magic. !Black5 70 Allows level 5 black magic. !Black6 100 Allows level 6 black magic. MP + 30% 400 Raises max MP by 30%. List of all Black magic types: -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ | LEVEL | NAME | MP COST | WHAT IT DOES | |-------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------| | 1 | Bolt | 4 MP | Low level Bolt elemental attack | | 1 | Fire | 4 MP | Low level Fire elemental attack | | 1 | Ice | 4 MP | Low level Ice elemental attack | | 2 | Poison | 2 MP | Low level Poison status attack | | 2 | Sleep | 3 MP | Inflicts "Sleep" status on enemy | | 2 | Toad | 8 MP | Inflicts "Toad" status on enemy | | 3 | Bolt 2 | 10 MP | Mid level Bolt elemental attack | | 3 | Fire 2 | 10 MP | Mid level Fire elemental attack | | 3 | Ice 2 | 10 MP | Mid level Ice elemental attack | | 4 | Bio | 16 MP | High level Poison status attack | | 4 | Break | 15 MP | Petrifying status attack turns enemy to stone | | 4 | Drain | 13 MP | Absorbs HP from enemy | | 5 | Bolt 3 | 25 MP | High level Bolt elemental attack | | 5 | Fire 3 | 25 MP | High level Fire elemental attack | | 5 | Ice 3 | 25 MP | High level Ice elemental attack | | 6 | Aspil | 1 MP | Absorbs MP from enemy | | 6 | Doom | 29 MP | Causes Death to enemy | | 6 | Flare | 39 MP | Very high level fire and bolt attack | -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ TIME MAGE --------- Mages of time and space. Use speed related and spacial magic to advantage all allies in battle. Physically weak but with strong, useful spells at higher levels. The most useful of these is the Telepo spell, which will allow your team to easily exit dungeons. This is vital later in the game in order to successfully gain the Mimic job class. Meteo also is very useful for inflicting damage on enemies. N-Zone teleports enemies away. All in all, this is an extremely useful job which should be mastered as a priority. It is a good idea to give the !Time command to a character in conjunction with a more powerful job to enable you to use it as a secondary ability effectively as otherwise you won't have the attack power you're capable of. Numerical values after each instance of !Time below relates to the number of the level which your mage may use Time Magic at. This number is a maximum. In this case, make sure you get level 6! This job is obtained at Walz Tower. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Time1 10 Allows level 1 time magic. !Time2 20 Allows level 2 time magic. !Time3 30 Allows level 3 time magic. !Time4 50 Allows level 4 time magic. !Time5 70 Allows level 5 time magic. !Time6 100 Allows level 6 time magic. EqRods 250 Equip rods regardless of current job. List of all Time magic types: -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ | LEVEL | NAME | MP COST | WHAT IT DOES | |-------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------| | 1 | Regen | 3 MP | Cast in battle to gradually heal character | | 1 | Slow | 3 MP | Causes enemy to slow down and so attack less | | 1 | Speed | 1 MP | Reduces battle speed | | 2 | Mute | 3 MP | Prevents magic use by either enemies or allies | | 2 | Float | 10 MP | Causes ally to float, avoiding ground attacks | | 2 | Haste | 5 MP | Speeds up ally, so can take more turns | | 3 | Demi | 9 MP | Halves enemy's current HP | | 3 | Stop | 8 MP | Stops one enemy, so cannot attack | | 3 | Telepo | 15 MP | Teleports entire party out of a dungeon | | 4 | Comet | 7 MP | Medium level meteorite damage to enemies | | 4 | Return | 1 MP | Return to battle start | | 4 | Slow 2 | 9 MP | Slows all enemies | | 5 | Demi 2 | 18 MP | Quarters enemy's current HP | | 5 | Haste 2 | 15 MP | Speeds all allies, so can take more turns | | 5 | Old | 4 MP | Inflicts "Old" status on enemy, to age them | | 6 | Meteo | 42 MP | High level meteorite damage to enemies | | 6 | Quick | 77 MP | Spell caster can act twice in battle | | 6 | N-Zone | 20 MP | Teleports enemy away | -------|----------|---------|------------------------------------------------ SUMMONER -------- Can summon strong beasts to aid in battle. Summons are so strong, they can kill some enemies with a single hit, but they use a lot of MP. For this reason, this ability is good to learn to use in conjunction with a job such as Lancer, so that you can use the !Lance command to absorb MP from an enemy and keep stocked up. There are plenty of useful summon creatures but perhaps the most useful is Golem. Golem will put a shield between you and the enemy to prevent you being hit by physical attacks. Great in battle against Gilgamesh... The numeric value after each instance of !Summ in the list below relates to the maximum level of summons that each ability involves. Learn them all in order to be able to summon the best creatures. Best of all, use !Call - although the summon will be random, so long as you're not in battle against an enemy which absorbs certain elements, you'll find it can be handy. When you hit the jackpot and get the summon you want, you can also use characters with the Mimic job class to repeat it over and over again, all without using any MP! This job is obtained from Walz Tower. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Summ1 15 Allows you to summon level 1 creatures. !Summ2 30 Allows you to summon level 2 creatures. !Summ3 45 Allows you to summon level 3 creatures. !Summ4 60 Allows you to summon level 4 creatures. !Summ5 100 Allows you to summon level 5 creatures. !Call 500 Randomly summon a monster without using MP. List of all Summons, their whereabouts and effects: -------|----------|----|-------------------|--------------------------------- | LEVEL | NAME | MP | LOCATION | DESCRIPTION | |-------|----------|----|-------------------|---------------------------------| | 1 | Chocobo | 4 | Walz Magic Shop | Deals low phys damage one enemy | | 1 | Remora | 2 | Walz Magic Shop | Stops enemy | | 1 | Sylph | 8 | Walz Magic Shop | Drains enemy, splits to allies | | 2 | Ifrit | 11 | Library Ancients | Fire attack all enemies | | 2 | Ramuh | 12 | Easterly Forest | Bolt attack all enemies | | 2 | Shiva | 10 | Walz Castle | Ice attack all enemies | | 3 | Shoat | 33 | Near ChboFrst, W2 | Petrifies enemies | | 3 | Golem | 18 | Valley of Dragons | Prevents Physical Attacks | | 3 | Titan | 25 | Karnak Meteor | Earth attack all enemies | | 4 | Carbuncle| 45 | X-Death's Castle | Casts reflect on all allies | | 4 | Hydra | 32 | Pirate Hideout | Strong bolt attack all enemies | | 4 | Odin | 48 | Val Castle B/ment | Death on all enemies | | 5 | Leviathan| 39 | Easterly Falls | Tidal Wave attack all enemies | | 5 | Phoenix | 99 | Phoenix Tower | Burn enmies, revives KO allies | | 5 | Bahamut | 66 | North Mountain | Strong non-elemental attack | -------|----------|----|-------------------|--------------------------------- BLUE MAGE --------- Learns and uses enemy skills and spells and casts them himself in battle. Some of these skills are very powerful. The "Learning" ability can be equipped to teach the Blue Mage skills. To be honest, I personally rarely use this job class. Some of the blue magic types are very useful admittedly, but you can very easily complete the game using the other jobs. Still, if you decide you want to use this job class, you will find that there is a huge variety of magic available. Getting all of it is tricky though, particularly since you will also have to have a Trainer in many cases to Control the enemies to get them to use the magic you want to learn. This job is obtained at the Wind Shrine. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Check 10 Find enemy's max HP/MP and weakness. Learning 20 Learn enemy skill when attacked by one. !Blue 70 Use enemy skills that have been learnt. !View 250 Find enemy's status, HP and weaknesses. List of Blue Magic, its effect and its whereabouts (note that the list of whereabouts is by no means exhaustive): -------------|-----------------------------|--------------------------------- | NAME | OBTAIN FROM | EFFECT | |-------------|-----------------------------|---------------------------------| | ???? | Tyrasaurus, WildDog | Max HP - Current HP = Damage | | Aero | Mauldwin, Gigas, Defeater | Wind elemental attack | | Aero2 | Page 32, FanWizard, Gigas | Stronger wind attack | | Aero3 | SealGuardian, Cycloskull | Strongest wind attack | | AquaRake | QuadrHarpy, KimaBrain | Water elemental attack | | BlakShok | BlkFlame, Shadow, Nile | Lower enemy level | | BlowFish | Lamia, Cactus, Hedgehog | 1000 HP fixed damage | | Burn Ray | FlameThrw, Shoat, Mechahead | Fire-based damage | | Condemn | X-Death, The Damned | 30 second countdown to Doom | | DoomClaw | Iron Claw, RockStatue | HP Down to single figure | | Exploder | MottlTrap, Bomb | User dies, damages enemy | | Flash | Coal Dust, Gilgamesh | Blinds enemies | | GoblinPunch | Goblin, BlackGoblin | Damages enemy based on level | | Guard Off | Page 256, TheDamned | Lowers target's defense | | Guardian | Stingray | Shell, Protes, Float all allies | | L2 Old | Druid, MagicDragon | "Old" to targets with a level | | | | divisible by 2 | | L3 Flare | Red Dragon, Druid | "Flare" targets with a level | | | | divisible by 3 | | L4 Quarter | Aquaus, Druid | Quarter HP of target with a | | | | level divisible by 4 | | L5 Doom | Page 64, LvlTripper, | Death to enemies with a level | | | Executor | divisible by 5 | | Little Song | Minimage, Jestrex | Shrinks one enemy | | MagHammer | Biblos, Drippy | Halve enemy's MP | | Mind Blast | TwnTania, MindFlare, Stoker | Paralyse & drain from enemy | | Missile | MechaHead, SoulGun, RcktGun | Quarters HP | | Moon Flute | Page 256, Harpy, Bewitchin | Berserk all allies | | Pep Up | MithrilDragon, Water Bus | User dies to restore other's HP | | Red Feast | SteelBat, various others | Drain enemy's HP | | Roulette | Serpentina | Randomly kills enemy or ally | | TimeSlip | Traveller, Sherry | Inflict Old and Sleep statuses | | Toad Song | Elf Toad, ArchaeoToad | Inflict Toad Status | | WhiteWind | FanWizard, A Rage, WhtFlame | Restore HP to all | -------------|-----------------------------|--------------------------------- RED MAGE -------- Mage who can use both White and Black magics, but only at lower levels. This job becomes pretty much useless later in the game, when you will need to make White and Black mages to use all the best spells. Check the White and Black Magic lists for details of available spells - Red Mages can ONLY use spells up to level 3 inclusive for both these categories. Furthermore, Red Mages can only use magic up to the levels which they have learned as White and Black mages. So if you have learned !White3 and !Black2, you will not be able to use black magic of level 3 at !Red3. This makes it even more useless... !Redx2 takes up so much ABP to learn that there is really no need to bother unless you are aiming for a perfectly complete game. This job is acquired at Walz Tower. Red Magic available is identical to that available for White and Black mages up to and including level 3. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Red1 20 Can use level 1 White and Black magic. !Red2 40 Can use level 2 White and Black magic. !Red3 100 Can use level 3 White and Black magic. !Redx2 999 Cast 2 spells simultaneously. BARD ---- Bards have low strength, but attack enemies or aid allies using the power of song, with various results. Not the most useful job in the game, although it is beneficial when fighting undead creatures. See the "Song List" below for further details. This is an easy job to master, and the !Sing command is sporadically useful, so you should go ahead and master it, since the Requiem song deals brilliant damage to undead creatures. Note that there are no level requirements to using any songs and none of them cost any MP to use. This job is acquired at the Black Chocobo Forest on Crescent Isle. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Hide 25 Hide from enemy in battle to avoid attacks. EqHarp 50 Equip Harp regardless of current job class. !Sing 100 Sing songs in battle with various effects. List of all songs and their effects, along with their whereabouts: -------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------ | NAME | OBTAIN FROM | EFFECT | |-------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------| | Love Song | Easterly Village W1 | Paralyze enemy | | Strength Song | Crescent Town Minstrel W1| Regen on party members | | Temptation Song | Rikks Village W1 | Muddle status to enemies | | Requiem | Kelb Village W2 | Damage undead enemies | | Song of Speed | Surgate Castle W2 | Haste on party members | | MP Song | Library of Ancients W3 | Raise magic power | | Power Song | Crescent Town Minstrel W3| Raise party attacks | | Level Song | Piano Master W3 | Raise party stats in battle | -------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------ DANCER ------ This job class is worth mastering primarily as it is the only class which allows Ribbons to be equipped, which protect against all statuses. Use dances in battle to damage the enemy and heal self. The weapon Dancing Dirk also allows you to use dances randomly in battle, regardless of whether you've learnt the !Dance ability or not. All dances are available automatically when you fulfil one of these conditions to using them. None have to be obtained by any other means. Upon using the !Dance command in battle, dances are chosen randomly - you have no control over which one is used. So it is NOT a good idea to use these when fighting undead monsters, since if you happen to use a dance which causes absorption, you will lose the HP or MP and the enemy will gain it from you, as these work in reverse. Other than the EqRibbon ability, Dancers are completely useless. You have been warned! This job is obtained at the Floating Ruins. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Flirt 25 Causes Muddle status to enemy. !Dance 50 Use Dance command in battle with various effects. EqRibbon 325 Equip Ribbon regardless of current job. List of all available dances and their effects: ---------------------|------------------------------------------------------- | NAME | EFFECT | |---------------------|-------------------------------------------------------| | Wonderwaltz | Absorb enemy's MP. Works in reverse on undead enemies | | Jitterbug | Absorb enemy's HP. Works in reverse on undead enemies | | Temptango | Inflicts Muddle status on enemy | | Sword Dance | Allows extra powerful physical attack for that turn | ---------------------|------------------------------------------------------- TRAINER ------- Skilled in the art of catching and controlling enemies. Catch enemies and release them in another battle to cause damage to enemies and bosses. Control enemies to learn certain blue magic spells. This job is obtained at Karnak Castle, after the Fire Ship section. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Tame 10 Paralyse enemy. !Control 50 Take charge of enemy's attacks. EqWhips 100 Equip whips regardless of current job. !Catch 300 Catch enemies and release later in battle. GEOMANCER --------- A deceptively useful job which allows you to avoid traps and avoid being hurt by walking through lava etc in dungeons. Earth magic is random, but uses no MP and often causes catastrophic damage to the enemy. It is imperative to master this job in preparation for some later dungeons where there are lava floors which you will take damage from if you have not mastered this job class. Also, !Earth magic is brilliant for killing off Skull Eaters in Jachol Caves, which have the evasion abilities of demons but the HP of half-dead maggots. !Earth is the Geomancer's only command ability. Earth Magic uses no MP and is random, meaning it does not have to be learnt but it likewise cannot be controlled. The attack used depends on the environment you are currently in and on the user's current level. The higher your level, the stronger the attack. There are different levels of attacks in each area, and they are mostly elemental, so may not be suitable for use on all enemies. This job is obtained at Karnak Castle, after the Fire Ship sequence. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ !Earth 25 Use the Earth magic command in battle to damage enemy. FindHole 50 Avoid traps in dungeons. AntiTrap 100 Take no damage when walking in lava etc. Earth Magic List. Note that Earth magic will change depending on your environment, so here they are listed in separate environment categories, with the lowest level earths at the top of each section: -----------------|-------------------|------------------|-------------------- | ENVIRONMENT | NAME | ENVIRONMENT | NAME | |-----------------|-------------------|------------------|--------------------| | FORESTS | Branch Arrow | DESERTS | Quicksand | | | Branch Spear | | Dust | | | Rage | | Heat Sand | | | Vine Hell | | Desert Storm | |-----------------|-------------------|------------------|--------------------| | WATER | Whirlpool | BUILDINGS | Gust | | | Big Wave | | Will O Wisp | | | Tsunami | | Sonic Boom | | | Waterfall | | Wind Slash | |-----------------|-------------------|------------------|--------------------| | FIELDS | Gust | MARSHES | Phantom | | | Wind Slash | | Peat Bog | | | Earthquake | | Will O Wisp | | | Twister | | Poison Mist | |-----------------|-------------------|------------------|--------------------| | MOUNTAINS | Earthquake | CAVES | Wind Slash | | | Stalagmite | | Stalagmite | | | Gust | | Will O Wisp | | | Twister | | Stalagtite | -----------------|-------------------|------------------|-------------------- CHEMIST ------- Master of potion use. Items can be mixed to provide a range of results (special mention for mixing 2 Dark Matters here for a strong attack). Curative items used in battle by a chemist have double their normal effect. The !Revive command is quite possibly the most useful command ability in the entire game. Mixing items can be very powerful. Probably the most powerful mixture is to use two Dark Matters against the enemy - this causes a high amount of damage. This job is acquired at the Floating Ruins. Ability ABP What it does ------- --- ------------ Medicine 15 Double the effect of curative items during battle. !Mix 30 Create new item in battle with various effects. !Drink 45 Use "Drinking" items in battle to improve stats. !Recover 135 Heals negative statuses. !Revive 405 Revive KOed characters. MIMIC ----- This is the only job which you won't get during the normal course of game play, but it is quite possibly the most useful job so make sure you get it! In World 3, go underwater and find the Sunken Walz Tower. Before entering, you will need to give characters the following abilities: have either a thief or make sure that within your party you have a character with the Dash ability AND a character with the !Flee command ability. As well as this, make either a Time Mage or give someone the !Time ability at a suitable level to be able to cast the Telepo spell. When you have done this, enter the tower and submerge. You will have seven minutes to complete this section. Dash through the tower and use !Flee for every random encounter. The general principle is to keep heading down. I won't post directions here, but the way through is fairly simple. When you reach the room where your shiny new job is waiting, you will notice that there is a job crystal there. Inspect this crystal and you will be asked a question. Choose "No" as your answer, and the battle will commence. This boss is Gogo. Gogo is a Mimic. That should be a hint as to what you need to do to win this battle, but if you can't work it out, then here is the answer: do nothing. Don't act and he can't mimic you. The battle will end automatically after a little time. You'll be given the Mimic job, and then you'll have to leave this area. Use the Telepo spell to get out of there before you run out of air! Mimic is an incredibly useful job, because you can choose whichever commands you want for all of your four slots - you don't have to have Attack or Item! You can use any abilities which you have already mastered, along with the !Mimic command (which you can master if you accumulate 999 ABP). Mimicking in battle means that you can copy the move that was done before - so you can have great fun repeating a powerful summon or spell constantly at a cost of zero MP! BARE ---- Bare is how you were born, and bare is how you will end, if you master all the useful jobs in time. If you select the "Bare" class, you will be able to use any of the abilities which you have mastered. So get mastering those jobs and you will be rewarded with kick-ass characters who can do whatever you want! I still find Mimic more useful though, as with the Bare class, you still have to include the Attack and Item commands. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= So there you have it!
