Karate emphasizes striking techniques (i.e. punching n' kicking) over grappling. Karate training can be divided into three major parts, kihon, kumite and kata. Kihon (基本) is the study of basic moves. Kumite (組手) means 'sparring' and develops from well defined forms to the free form. Kata (型) means 'forms' and is a fight against imaginary enemies, expressed as a fixed sequence of moves. =====================\ 5.1 HISTORY [HTR] \====================================================== ============================================================================= Originally, karate was written as 唐手 ("Tang hand" from the Chinese Tang dynasty or by extension, "Chinese hand") reflecting the Chinese influence on the style. The current way of writing means "empty hand" n' karate-do thus "the way of the empty hand". Karate is most likely a mix of a Chinese fighting art brought to Okinawa by merchants n' sailors from Fujian Province, with Okinawan martial art. The Okinawans called the style "te", hand. Early Okinawan styles of karate were Shuri-te, Naha-te n' Tomari-te, named after the three cities in which they were formed. In 1820, Sokon Matsumura blended the three styles of te into "Shaolin" (Chinese 少林) or "Shorin-Ryu" (in Japanese) or "Forest Style" (English). However Matsumura's own students broke the style back down again into more branches n' their students continued this break down adding or subtracting whatever suited them. Gichin Funakoshi, a student of one of Matsumura's students Anko Itosu, is said by some to have introduced n' popularized karate on the main islands. However, there were many others. Funakoshi's karate came from Itosu's version of Matsumura Shorin-ryu, which is commonly called Shorei-ryu. Funakoshi's style of karate was later named Shotokan by others. He was responsible for changing the way of writing the name of the art; he did this to get karate accepted by the budo organisation Dai Nippon Butokukai. In a time of rising Japanese nationalism, it was important not to make karate look foreign as the old way of writing it implied. Funakoshi's main adversary was Choki Motobu. Karate was popularized in Japan n' introduced into high schools before World War II. Like most martial arts active in Japan, karate made its transition to karate-do at the beginning of the 20th century. The "do" in "karate-do" means "way", which is analogous to the familiar Chinese concept of tao. As it was adopted into modern Japanese culture, karate was imbued with some elements of Zen Buddhism, n' the practice of karate is sometimes called a form of "moving zen". Classes often begin and end with brief periods of meditation. Also, the repetition of movements, as in kata, is consistent with zen meditation in that it is intended to maximize a student's composure, awareness, n' physical presence (speed n' power), even while under stress. Karate teachers differ greatly in the way they acknowledge - if at all - the zen influence in karate-do. The modernization (n' systemization) of karate in Japan also included the adoption of the ubiquitous white uniform (dogi or keikogi) mostly called just gi. Pronounced 'ghee. N' colored belt ranks, both of which were originated n' popularized by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo. Photos of early Okinawan practitioners show the masters in the street clothes of the day, or sometimes in briefs. ====================\ 5.2 STYLES [STL] \======================================================= ============================================================================= Within karate there are a multitude of different styles or schools. The most renowned are Shaolin, Shobayashi, Kobayashi-ryu, Matsubayashi-ryu, Matsumura Seito n' Matsumura Motobu. From these came the more popular styles we have today such as Chito-ryu, Shorinji-ryu (Kempo) n' Shorei-ryu as well as Shotokan, Shotokai, Goju-ryu ("hard-soft way") n' Kyokushin ("ultimate truth"). Other mainstream styles include Shorinjiryu, Seido, Wado-ryu ("way of peace"), Uechi Ryu, Shito-ryu, Shudokan, Bushido Goju-Ryu n' Isshin-ryu (there are at least 3 different styles of isshinryu). Some styles of karate have teachers that have created hybrids of karate styles such as the JIKC style, which uses a combination of karate styles. The Shotokan style of karate is characterised by deep, long stances said to provide stability n' powerful movements. At the other end of the spectrum, Wado Ryu prefers quick n' subtle body movements (known as 'tai sabaki') to evade attacks n' provide swift counter attacks. The Wado Ryu style was introduced to the West by Tatsuo Suzuki. In modern Japan, two main branches of Karate dominate. Traditional karate styles like Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Wado-ryu n' Shito-ryu are so-called because they were founded at or before the turn of the 20th century. Full contact karate includes Kyokushin-kaikan which was founded by Masutatsu Oyama n' other offshoots of Kyokushin, so-called because emphasis in matches is placed on the amount of damage done rather than the quality of technique displayed (although this is also important). Most full contact karate styles or organizations have developed from Kyokushin karate. ================================\ 5.3 KARATE IN THE WEST [KAW] \=========================================== ============================================================================= Karate, like jujutsu n' judo, most likely came to America n' then to the rest of the world through two primary paths: Japanese immigrants to Hawaii n' the mainland, where it stayed largely inside the Japanese American community, although to a lesser degree in Hawaii, n' by specialized study by members of the police n' the military. It would be accurate to say that the biggest boost to the popularization of karate in America came with the American military occupation of Japan after World War II; once American soldiers had assimilated the discipline, they returned with it to the States n' began to disseminate it. Many masters went to the United States to popularize their art. These included Tsutomu Ohshima, a student of Gichin Funakoshi, who founded Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). ===============================\ 5.4 KARATE AS A SPORT [KAS] \============================================ ============================================================================= Karate may also be practiced as a competitive sport, although unlike other martial arts such as taekwondo or judo it does not possess Olympic status, because there is no head organisation for Karate as whole n' no uniform rules among all styles. Competition can be in either kumite or kata; competitors may enter either as individuals or as part of a team. In kata, points are awarded by five seated judges, according to the quality of the performance, in a manner analogous to gymnastics or ice skating tournaments. A good kata performance must perform all the movements correctly but also show a personal interpretation of the movements through one's variation in speed. When kata is performed as a team (usually of three), it is also important to match the timing of techniques as closely as possible. In kumite there are two fighters paired in a timed fight, usually ranging from two to five minutes. Scores are awarded either by technique or location. Allowed techniques n' hitting locations vary from style to style. Further, kumite can be either half-contact (as in Shotokan) or full contact (as in Kyokushinkai). In the United States, karate tournaments are a popular part of the sport, ranging in size from small local gatherings to national events. They are typically divided into classes by skill, age n' event type (kata, kumite n' weapons-kata), n' have rules depending on location n' the chief style(s) involved. ############################################################################# <<< 6. FIGHTING STRATEGIES >>> [FST] ############################################################################# * NOTE (in my opinion): - In DOA3, most of characters - ESPECIALLY female characters - are stronger n' more formidable! - Basically, DOA2U likes DOA2: Hardcore (not entirely). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 8.1 GENERALS [GEN] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1/ Try to master the Holds - one of the determinal conditions to win! 2/ Master the Throws, Guard Breaks n' Incidental Attacks as well! 3/ NEVER UNDERRATE YOUR OPPONENT! 4/ When your opponent stops attack, just attack or throw ASAP. 5/ Don't overuse long combos! You'll be counter-attacked easily! 6/ Use all "Wall Effects" (Wall Throws, Wall Attacks, Danger Reach) or "Off the Edge" (stages such as Lorelei, Lost World...) to defeat the opponent faster! In these case, Blow Attacks (Azuma, Fujin, Ren-Fujin...) are your best choices! However, this strategy is not fair when you VS w/ your friends! Select "safe stages" such as Aquarium, Forest, Glacier...(I don't remember their name exactly) 7/ Some small-but-useful techniques: - Getting-Up (Recover): When you're downed, press these buttons continuosly * P: Get up quickly at your present location. * K: Rising mid kick. - Defensibility (Air-Recover): When you're about to be knocked to the ground, press P, K or F to recover n' avoid going down. NOTE: It's not effective w/ some attacks! - Corner Escape: When you're being pushed to the wall or edges, just use Free Steps (hold Up or Down Button) at once to escape! 8/ For using Hitomi: - She's a bit weak, but fast n' skilled. Just use her fortes well! - Try to master these moves: Ren-Fujin, Kama-Gaeshi, Shien, Azuma, Suzaku, Ryubi, Ren-Kengyu, Tsuki Ren-Geri, Raigyu, Shorin, Hasai, Azusa-Yumi, Shusho n' Koto-Guruma. - "Shorin > Kama-Gaeshi/Ren-Fujin/Shien" is the useful attack! Use it frequently! 9/ Finally, just set the difficulty to Hard or Very Hard! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 8.2 AGAINST OTHER CHARACTERS [AOC] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= KASUMI [KSM] ------ Gender: Female Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Mugen Tenshin Ninjutsu Tenjinmon Occupation: Runaway Shinobi She's fast n' graceful, also a tough opponent. Her atks are excellent: they are smooth combinations between Attacks, Holds, Throws n' Guard Breaks! To against her, just use the same strategy as you've used w/ Ayane. But she's easier to defeat than Ayane, I think so. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- RYU HAYABUSA [RYU] ------------ Gender: Male Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Hayabusa Style Ninjutsu Occupation: Curio Shop Owner He's always my most formidable opponent, for several reasons: - At first view, he's not a dangerous rival. HOWEVER, NEVER UNDERRATE HIM! He always perform long combos, Throws, Holds n' Handstand Atks! Most of them are nearly impossible to forecast n' hold! - In DOA2 Hardcore: He's my most using character. An expert in Holds, Fast Atks n' Handstand Atks! - In DOA3: He's a bit hard to control, but more dangerous than DOA2! Therefore, try to use these tips: - Don't overuse punches! If not, you'll be counter-attacked easily by his Izuna Atks - one of the most powerful moves in the game! - Critical > Blow Atks, Defend n' Holds are your best choices! - Fight him w/ all your strength n' carefulness! -----o-o---< >---o-o----- ZACK [ZAC] ---- Gender: Male Nationality: American Fighting Style: Thai Style Boxing (Muay Thai) Occupation: DJ His atks are very fast n' powerful, but not so hard to forecast n' hold! Although he's stronger in DOA3, but w/ me, he's the weakest character. You can defeat him easily! -----o-o---< >---o-o----- BRAD WONG [BRW] --------- Gender: Male Nationality: Chinese Fighting Style: Zui Ba Xian Quan (Drunken Fist) Occupation: Bohemian He has an annoying fighting style: Drunken Fist. Looks so dumb, but very effective! Besides, he has another style: Lay Down Attack! W/ this style, he can dodge most of your atks. You must use Low Atks to attack him, it's also mean you'll be counter-attacked by his Low Holds! Therefore; Guard, Throws, Blow n' Incidental Atks are all you need. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- TINA ARMSTRONG [TAS] -------------- Gender: Female Nationality: American Fighting Style: Pro wrestling Occupation: Pro wrestler Like her father, she's a wrestler too. But she's much faster than Bass, it means she's more dangerous! Her main atks are Throws n' Hi/Mid Counter. Low Attacks will be very effective against her! -----o-o---< >---o-o----- BASS ARMSTRONG / LEON / BAYMAN [WRL] ------------------------------ Gender: Male (all) Nationality: American / Italian / Russian Fighting Style: Pro wrestling / Command Sambo (Russian Martial Arts) Occupation: Pro wrestler / Mercenary / Assassin They're called "wrestlers", in my way. They have powerful punches n' kicks, especially Throws - can wipe nearly half your HP! However, speed is their weakness. To defeat them, try to use these tips: - Close combat or long combo is the biggest mistake! Keep a safe distance! - Use Holds to against their punches/kicks. - To attacks: only perform Critical, Blow n' Incidental Atks! - Never let them throw you! If you're grabbed, try to use Evade Throws by pressing A (F+P) button! -----o-o---< >---o-o----- JANN LEE [JAN] -------- Gender: Male Nationality: Chinese Fighting Style: Jeet Kune Do Occupation: Bouncer WAATAAAHHHH!!!! This is Master Bruce Lee's style! Very fast, very powerful, very tough IF you fight carelessly! Most of his atks are Hi/Mid Types n' punches! You can block them easily! Holds, Back Atks n' Low Atks are your best choices here. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- LEI FANG [LEI] -------- Gender: Female Nationality: Chinese Fighting Style: T'ai Chi Quan Occupation: College Student She's the genius of T'ai Chi Quan! She's not too strong, but very agile n' a deadly opponent! Throws n' Holds are her main atks. She's an expert in quick n' strong punches as well. Fight her w/ all your strength! -----o-o---< >---o-o----- CHRISTIE [CHR] -------- Gender: Female Nationality: English Fighting Style: She Quan (Snake Fist) Occupation: Assassin I haven't faced her much, n' have no any trouble to beat her, like B.Wong. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- HELENA [HEL] ------ Gender: Female Nationality: French Fighting Style: Pi Qua Quan Occupation: Opera Singer She's a tough opponent! Most of her atks are hard to forecast, n' very very deadly! She's excellent at Holds n' Bokuho Atks as well! N' w/ the Bokuho Atks (low position), she can dodge most of your atks! However, her main atks are punches, n' she's not so fast. Therefore, Holds, Throws n' Critical-Blow Atks (such as Tsubauchi > Azuma) are your best choices here. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- HAYATE / EIN [EIN] ------------ Gender: Male Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Mugen Tenshin Ninjutsu Tenjinmon / Karate Occupation: Ninja / Karate Instructor NOTE: Hayate was known as Ein in DOA2. However, I have no intent to analyze about his story here. Next time, I'll write a detailed FAQ about this! - W/ Ein: His style is Karate, it means he's excellent at punches n' punch- kick combos! His atks are deadly (stronger than Hitomi), however, he'll lose his balance a bit after attacking! Holds n' Low/Mid Atks are very effective against him. But one more thing: Ein is an expert in Holds! - W/ Hayate: now he's a ninja w/ the same style as Kasumi. Besides, he uses some Karate Atks yet, such as Hokage! But he's less dangerous than Ein before, in my opinion. You can defeat him by your carefulness. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- AYANE [AYA] ----- Gender: Female Nationality: Japanese Fighting Style: Mugen Tenshin Ninjutsu Hajinmon Occupation: Ninja She becomes faster n' faster! "Female Tengu" is her nickname. Yes, she's the fastest character in DOA, also the most annoying opponent! Just defend! When she stops atk, beat her at once! Holds is the good choice as well. Fight w/ her CAREFULLY! -----o-o---< >---o-o----- TENGU (means "Evil Fox") [TEN] ----- Gender: Male Nationality: Unknown Fighting Style: Tengu Do Occupation: Unknown The boss of DOA2! He's very annoying, very good at Throws n' Holds! Most of his attacks are Mid Types, therefore, just use your Mid Holds! Wall Effects, Throws n' Incidental Attacks are your good choices. -----o-o---< >---o-o----- OMEGA [OMG] ----- Unknown all! Hmm... The boss of DOA3! He's one of the toughest opponents, but not so hard to defeat. This is my way: - CLOSE COMBAT! Approach him as fast as you can! - He always uses Thunder Shot/Fire Shot (far) n' Holds/Throws (near). Be careful! - Avoid knocking him to the ground. Or else, you can jump to evade the "energy blast" from his fall! - Just attack n' guard! In this case, long combos w/ Critical Effect (like P,P,P,P of Kasumi) are your best choices! ############################################################################ <<< 9.
