the next solar maximum is expected to reach its peak on December 21st 2012.

previous solar maximums are believed to be caused by the opposing gravitational forces of Jupiter and Saturn when they are on opposite sides of the sun, which occurs about every 11 years.

the last few solar maximums on record show an increase in intensity with each new maximum. The upcoming maximum is expected to be the strongest ever recorded.

since the maximum falls on the exact date at which our solar system will begin its intersection with the Galactic Equator, as well as when we will be aligned with the center of our galaxy(where there is maximum mass), solar disruptions are expected to be much worse than ever before in known history.

nothing to this magnitude has ever happened, especially to a civilization as dependent on electronics as we are. if a strong enough solar flare occurs, it could end the power grid as we know it. all communications and technology would catastrophically fail, and the first thing to go would be the satellites orbiting the earth.
