This isn't an actual debate on my part, I just have a simple question. Why do people get so hyped up in defending the system that they use? I was searching to see if an HDMI cable was worth buying, and in the results most of the forums turned into ridiculous debates on these people bombing each other on why the 360 or the PS3 was better. What is it that sparks people to get so fired up over this?

HDMI gives higher definition in both picture and sound. You wont get 720p/1080i/1080p via a composite cable.

The answer to your question is thus: People are so passionate about the differences because there are so few that have any meaning.

But I could get 1080p quality when I had a X360 by composite..

I have 1080p on my TV. So is HDMI still worth it? And thanks Dhampy, I kind of had a thought that it was something along those lines.

True 1080p will only work via an HDMI cable.

I should explain more.

Composite is poor quality, often blurry.

Component is usually SVIDEO connections, standard console connections, good quality.

HDMI is top, gives more quality per pixel.

With composite the signal has to be sent by an analogue carrier, and the TV has to convert that to 1080p (or whatever setting is set).

Component is semi-digital, as in digital for picture but not for sound.

HDMI is all digital, resulting in the TV/Monitor not having to convert any signal to digital. Most movies will show in true 1080p with widescreen capability, while component's widescreen is usually the full screen (i.e. Stepped up).

It's a ridiculous argument anyway as neither console is true 1080P. It's all upconverted. and unless you have a high quality surround sound unit you wont notice any difference between component and HDMI.

Hell you could argue that the ancient tuning tubes used in the 70s had better sound quality, but jeez were they expensive!
