    I think it's because of less atmosphere pressure than lower altitudes. This also causes the lack of reaction force(less pressure less air) which an aircraft needs to take off!

    Air at higher altitude is less dense than lower altitude. The effect is that a plane requires more speed to generate the lift needed to get in the air and more runway is needed for this.
