I had gotten it working in my second post, I probably should have been a bit more specific.
The game forces you to patch the game launcher program and I made the mistake of assuming it was applying an entire game patch to 1.01, but it only patches the launcher. Ubisoft has a 1.01 patch on their site which is separate from this, and a bit more research on my end found and installed this, and everything started working ok.
Thank you I came here looking for the answer and that was it, I THOUGHT when it said updating that it was updaing the game to 1.01 ut it turns out I was still at 1.0
