I have no idea how to check which version of the game i have, when i press 'check for updates' it say's there are none, so i presume i have 1.0006, so i get the 1.006 trainer, and it says at the bottom left of the trainer, 'XR3DA is loading' and it never get's further, ive tried running game and trainer as admin, but that doesn't help either, and i tried 1.0005 too, still not working. any idea's?

if you have the steam version, then its 1.0005 if you have the retail version its most likely 1.0000
version 1.0006 is a fan patch, not a "legitimate" patch.
All i can suggest is you download the 1.0005 patch and try to apply it, it should tell you whether or not its patched up to date.
Also, if you have vista (i'm not sure if it works in xp or win7 but it should), open up the stalker folder with explorer (not internet explorer, but regular explorer), and set the icon view to "tile".
You can do this by either clicking on the views button and selecting tiles, or clicking a file in the folder, holding down ctrl and scrolling down your mouse wheel.
Still with me? good. Ok after that hover your mouse over the game executable and a tooltip SHOULD pop up with the file version and some other info such as the file type.
Hope that helps
