To import save games from mass effect 1 go to the main folder "Mass Effect 2\Binaries\" and launch "Mass Effect 2 Configurations Utility". If it is the first time you run it it will take some time to detect your pc configuration. After that select "Save Games" from the menu on the left and click "Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games". Have fun.

You can get to the configuration right from your ME2 launcher (link on your desktop).
Still it would have been nice an "auto-import" feature or something like that.

All. Even the most insignificant ones. All. Mostly it affects what NPCs you meet in game. If you killed Fist, you wont meet him (he doesnt have much to say). If you killed that asari commando near Thorian (the one that gave you memories), you won't meet her in second game and won't have the sidequest she gives you. So yeah... Most of the choices have impact on the second game.
