Hi, when I press F1 in the main menu to activate the trainer, the game crashes and I get a message saying General Protection Fault.
Is this because incompatibility? My game version is 1.01

You need the 1.1 trainer.

Some people have had success in ridding themselves of GPF's by having Steam verify the integrity of local cache files.
Enter Steam, go to My Games, right-click on Borderlands, select Properties, click the Local Files tab and click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".

Actually I've been having some trouble with it too, but I have the retail original version trainer and the original retail version of the game. Still getting GP Faults when I hit F1.

That's because it's not a problem with the trainer, but with the game.

Yes, make sure you are using the appropriate version of the trainer for the appropriate version of the game. If you're playing Steam, use the STEAM trainer. If your game is boxed, use the RETAIL trainer.
Also, if in Vista/7, make sure both the game and trainer are running in Administrator mode.
