can anyone tell me what am i supposed to use crystals for? i have gathered almost 30 crystals of different colours and abilities and i don't know what to use them for. maybe socket them into armour?

They act as armour for a companion character you haven't encountered yet. See: "The Stone Prisoner" DLC.
