Also, thanks to Cal & PWizard - the new version of the trainer works perfectly with the Razer no-cd fix. The new Mega-Ammo option is spot on.
Edit: An option to increase one's proficiency rating with the weapons would be appreciated too.
As for Steam, it is certainly highly preferable to the alternative - that being SecuROM and its cohorts. The Steam application itself is, all things considering, pretty good - as well as being free from DRM infections, despite being a method of DRM itself. Really, the complaints for the multiplayer in this have to be laid at the feet of 2K and GameSpy for - as usual - the hideous lack of proper server preparation for a release on the PC. That, and they somehow managed to let cracked versions play online. Stellar job there guys!

As far as multiplayer, most of the problems I've heard about seem to stem from people not opening the proper ports on their routers.
TCP: 7777,28900-28902,28910,29900
UDP: 6500,7777-7787,9989,27900
Forward those and you should be able to both join and host public and private games.
Err, guys, an option to DECREASE XP would be GREATLY appreciated... It would appear that I've hit some kind of level cap and I'm no longer earning XP - which means my weapon proficiency stats wont increase any further.
I'm not sure where exactly the cap is - I was level 19, and I boosted to 25, saved, exited and reloaded my save game, but I'm still not earning any XP anymore. It used to be the case that if you boosted your level or XP at all then shot at someone, your weapon stats wouldn't increase and you'd only get 1XP per kill, but that would clear out after a reload of the game.
Either that or just an option to increase one's weapon proficiency rating.
The level cap is 50. However once you use the trainer to upgrade your level you'll cease to earn EXP (someone else mentioned the same issue earlier in this thread). This is why I've only used the trainer to add money, and played the game normally.
