    In XP I turn off the AV and some other programs in services.msc
    and then stop programs not needed in task manager.

    Not sure about Vista but should work. Oh wait, in the Vista task manager there is a tab for "services" Check that out and "stop" unneeded programs.

    okay...thank you. its worth a shot. i'll try that. if u do this repeatedly...does it make the program or the OS un-stable?

    that's a relief. thanx. i know this might be an in-appropriate place to post this...but....how do i tweak Vista(safely) so that it runs faster?
