im trying to get the cheats working after playing through at least 4 times without cheats.
i follow all the instructions in fiddling about with the .ini but for some reason everytime i try to save it after editing it it always comes up with this error message.
"Cannot create the C:\Program Files\SWKoToR\swkotor.ini file make sure the path and file name are correct"
i dont know why it does this as i made sure the name is the same as it was before.

You need to copy the File to your Documents Folder or somwhere else. Then make the changes to the copy and Save. Delete the original and paste your new one into the folder. Ist a problem with Vista that has no cure and from what i know of they dont plan on fixing.

The information about Vista might be a partial answer to my question, but if anyone has any advice here is the issue:
I have Vista, playing on a HP laptop (only thing I have) and have tried to activate cheats several times after beating the game. Each time the cheats don't work and hitting ` then any other key might open inventory or change camera angles, etc.
It seems that I can edit the file without any trouble, have not tried copying to another folder editing and copying back since it can be edited in place and saved without trouble, but have tried several times to reinstall the game and try activating the cheats again, but that has not worked, the trainers also do not seem to work saying they cannot find a given file. Any suggestions?
Oh lastly if this information helps, it shows I have version 2.0 (or 2.0xxx) of the game.
Second unrelated question, where do the saved games get saved? They are not in the saved games folder on my computer and I cannot seem to find them anywhere else in the game folders, yet when I have tried to reinstall the game they are deleted.
thank you all for any replies.

You need to right click on the game and run it as administrator to be able use cheats. *WARNING* You will need to start over! Running the game as administrator blocks ascess to your saved games. Someone posted that you cannot use cheats while on Endor Spire but i have found that to be incorrect.

For saved file look in documents for the user that is currently logged on your computer.Haven't played this game in a while but had no trouble with cheats or ini file.Tho you said you are Vista user therefore i will install game again on vista to check and will get back on that.As i recall console was invisible in kotor2 aswell.Only solution is to try to move or try to open inventory after you pressed `(tilda).

For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users that have admin rights on your home PC. Instead of pulling your hair out and fumbling with files. Simply:
1st go to your Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic installation folder. (ect. programs files/lucas arts/kotor)
2nd find the file named "swkotor.ini" (it is listed as a configuaraton settings file)
3rd right-click the file and click "properties"; next click on the TAB at the top that says "security"; after that for special permissions click "Advanced" towards the bottom; now click on "Change Permissions" at the the bottom. This will bring up a entry list of users allowed to modify/edit this current file.
4th find your user entry name. (esc. John Doe) and verify that your current permissions are at Full Control. If not click on the user that has "Read and Exectute" rights only and click "Edit"; next check the box at the top of the permission list that says "Full Control" this will allow you to save settings, read/write to this file. Click OK and then keep clicking OK until all boxes are closed.
This may sound like allot but it only takes about 15 seconds to complete once you fingure it out. Edit away and enjoy. I hope this help!
