I'd hate it.
Different consoles appeal to different markets. The Nintendo Wii, for example, appeals more to the casual crowd than the Playstation 3 does.
Bottom line: It would not work, fanboys would never come together and love the same console, and the entire market would come crashing down.
The competition is what's keeping the market alive. The different types of games, casual, hardcore, etc. makes the market what it is today.
The only time you will see Sony and Microsoft together is if MS buys out Sony.
