Different consoles appeal to different markets. The Nintendo Wii, for example, appeals more to the casual crowd than the Playstation 3 does.
Bottom line: It would not work, fanboys would never come together and love the same console, and the entire market would come crashing down.
The competition is what's keeping the market alive. The different types of games, casual, hardcore, etc. makes the market what it is today.
Sony is worth considerably more than Microsoft. It would have to be Sony buying out Microsoft.
