It only happens when driving fast. The game skips every few seconds, then goes back normal. Making driving extremely difficult because of skipping screen.

I know the problem you are talking about. It's the tweak the game developers applied on the Patched version of the game to make performance higher on top-end PC's.

If your game is unpatched, I mean version 1.0, then it is the choppy FPS - Which is the game's biggest drawback.

Life is best for those who enjoy it, difficult for those who analyze it and worst for those who criticize it.

I was having the same problem, more or less in both SR2 and GTA4 - choppy frame rates, variable frame rates, frozen frames etc. making driving almost impossible.

My machine has enough horsepower to do most games seamlessly but these two ported-from-console games are terrible.

Depending on your video card & you are best off with a fairly new, higher end card, make sure you update your video driver to the latest version. nVidia updates their video drivers almost weekly now! ATI not quite as frequently but they do update as needed. I ended up buying a new XFX nVidia 9600GT w/ 512MB VRAM & installing the newest drivers for it. I have not had a problem with SR2 since installing the new card & I'm running maximum graphics.

Frame rates for GTA4 are still slow but steady at max graphic resolutions w/ all graphic tweaks enabled. Reduce your tweaks (shadow depth, distance, textures, etc.) one at a time until you get decent results.

You just might want to drop the following command line batch file into your WinXP system32 folder. You start it by typing stopservices into the "run" command line thingie in your start menu.

Copy the whole thing below into the root of your WinXP system32 folder:

(see followup reply for the batch file)

WHOOPS! I can't post cuz it's too long - exceeds 6000 characters. But it's available as a free download from PCWorld:
