That's a good idea.
AS long as they don't do a modern or futuristic Total War, I'm happy. Too many of those.

if they make a another S: TW they need to make it easier the first one was way too hard and Timur the Lame/Tamerlane who was an original soldier in the time of Kublai Khan. (Genghis Khans son)

I actually wouldn't mind if they did a mixed variety of ages into one game. You know what I am talking about? Some other games made games like that. Although they were crappy the idea was pretty nice. You start off from the ancient time and advanced into the modern age by various town center upgrades and upgrade units via barracks, etc.
It would be completely awesome for a Total War game. However as long as they have a limit that doesn't turn to shooters. Total War and shooters don't mix. Maybe have Empire: Total War as the last age available. You start at like ancient roman days (Rome: Total War). Have the campaign map stretched more into Asia.
Make the only playable factions (factions are always limited anyways) those of factions that have broken off throughout the ages to make various other countries. Take for example Spain, they were there in the Ancient time and have lasted history. You had ancient Britons, Germans, Gauls could later transform to the Irish or Scotish. Not entirely sure who France evolved from however I'd have to guess the Gauls as well since they pretty much controlled those lands for a awhile or the Romans when they took it from them.
You get what I am getting at though? You start as a ancient country and advance through the ages. The campaign would have so many events that would make it harder for you to take over the campaign map that would make it last longer. Events like the Barbian Invasion, Mongol Invasion, you name it.
Just a idea. However doubt that would happen as it would take too much effort to design. Not to mention how much space it would require. Nobody would ever be-able to play it. Atleast the majority. I would have to go with Shogun or Rome for the next game.
