    My armies usually consist of mostly line infantry, with about 6 green jackets ( i play as british, but whatever equivilant that shoots at 125 will work) about 4 or 5 units of 4 inch morters with percussion shot researched. and about 1 or 2 cavalry units and sometimes 1 or 2 puckle guns. i place the green jackets in front, behind is a solid line of line infantry with the ends turnd inwards to protect against flank attacks. behind the line infantry i have my 4 inch morters( they can shoot things like 750 yrds away, also put them on autofire ) the cavalry is on the ends as well with maybe one behind the morters incase of a rear attack. on the ends of the main line of line infantry i have the puckle guns facing the enemy.( these arent very accurate but they demoralise the enemy real bad and usually slaughter cavalry units real badly.) When i start the battle i have my green jackets create the wooden spikes (try to position them infront of your line infantry thats infront of your Morter line to protect against a cavalry charge) immediatly then pull them back behind the line infantry, or i'll split them up and place them on the flanks since they can shoot much farther then the line infantry. only downside is their max numbers are 80 as compared to 160 line infantry( remember more barrels shooting is a good thing!
    the morters usually hit the targets really well and make them attack you, even in seige mode. so u make your units in defensive mode with fire at will and just watch the bodies pile up Below is a crappy attempt at a diagram of how my lines usually start off. P=Puckle gun L=Line Infantry
    G= Green Jackets C= Cavalry M=Morters**Amounts of L or M isnt amount of units**

    L M M M M M M M M M M M L
    {P}L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L{P}

    Hope this helps
