I must be one of the few people who found him without knowing or reading guides on him, i was on my way to do a main quest mission and stumbled across this junk yard. I was looking for someone to get the key from for the door but instead found dogmeat surrounded by 3 dead raiders, i rareley ever let him come around with me because i fear he may be KIA. Wow my first CHU annecdote.

Nope, annecdote as in a short personal story.
I was playing a second time because my first one stuffed up. Anyway, I was looking for the Lawbringers or whatever the good mercenaries are called and just stumbled across Scrapyard. I saw a bunch of raiders and wastelands bodies lying around and was about to grab something when he popped up.
I don’t take him with me either, but I heard that one of the DLC sets give you to get the ability to get a perk called puppies or something when he dies, so you can get a new one .
