Just got the game today, finally only to discover that it wont recognise my Logitech dual action gamepad.

Has anyone had similar problems, maybe with other controllers and maybe know of a work around for this? cause i'll be damned if i'm going to buy a 360 controller JUST so I can play GTA 4 without clunky keyboard control driving

This question appears to pop up on several forums now. It seems the Xbox 360 controller is the only one that works.
I don't see what's wrong with using the keyboard and mouse. That's probably me though, I've never used anything else :P

Why would you need a controller lol,
It's not that clunky, if you wanna use the controller I suggest getting the Xbox 360 version of it. The mouse and keyboard are much better, but it's your opinion...

I did a bit of investigative work and I've found a fix.

    Download the file here...

    Link

What you have to do is backup and replace 4 dll files in your windows/system32 folder with the xinput1_3.dll from the archive.

    You're looking to replace...

    xinput1_1.dll
    xinput1_2.dll
    xinput1_3.dll
    xinput9_1_0.dll

... so yes, you'll need to make four copies of the dll from the archive and rename them to match.

The next thing to do is copy the xbox360cemu.ini from the archive to the root of your windows directory. This file determines the button and axis mapping in relation to xbox 360 controls. You will most likely need to edit this file so refer to the readme for details.

I've got a playstation 2 gamepad working with the game using this fix and it should work for any game that requires the use of the 360 controller like fallout 3 or overlord. The analog sticks work properly too.

Keyboard and mouse are fine for walking around etc..
but ive always found, since GTA3 (and for other games) that for vehicle control a gamepad/joystick offers much more precise control, this would be ever more needed with GTA 4's touchy physics (I've lost count of how many times the car has spun out )

And thanks rich_is_bored for finding that fix!

    @Rich

I copied all the files over and renamed them to match the originals but my control still isn't registering in the XInputTest application.

I noticed if I copy the xinput1_3.dll and XInputTest.exe files into a separate directory on the desktop it picks up my controller fine. Obviously, I need this to work in the System32 folder. Anyone having any similar issues or solutions?

I have a Logitech Dual Action controller for the record.

The first patch for GTA4 coming within the next week or so will allow for other gamepads.

And don't do that hack. Rockstar says the patch and that hack will not work well together and can cause serious problems.

I can only assume that GTA 4 is loading xinput dlls from an alternate location.

How did you get GTA 4? Did you buy it through Steam or did you buy it retail? I own the Steam version.

That said search your system for those files. It's loading up the original files from somewhere. It just happens to be the System32 folder for me.

As far as this upcoming patch is concerned, so long as you have the original dlls backed up and can easily restore them, you'll be able to apply the update when Rockstar releases it like everyone else.
