Ok so as I was playing through the first time I got this I realized one thing. Kaiden is a lot like Carth from KOTOR, he always interrupts or speaks his opinion at random and annoying times, I guess the company just couldn't let Carth go.....
He was voiced by the same actor, Raphael Sbarge.
And yes Mass Effect borrowed a hell of a lot from the best RPG series out there...KotOR. They were both made by Bioware afterall

Like i said, the company just couldn't let him go. I really think they should though. Mass Effect is KOTOR in another universe basically.
