i think the game already tells us where they came from, the forerunners found the flood, built the halos and built those enviroment rooms for the flood to live in...like a cage, and gravemind is like the flood king or w/e he controls all of them, it hints to it all in the game, gotta watch that stuff! so ya the forerunners found flood, built halo, locked them up for the good of the universe...we come along...stupid as always...and set them free cuz we are retards...any questions? lmao

The flood was created, and accidentally released by the covenant in an experiment for a bio-weapon against the humans. The forerunners built halo as a fail safe in case the flood spread too much.

sorry if this has been said b4 but i cant be bothered to read the rest. the flood was only released by the covenant on Halo 04. as for u guys near the beginning im pretty sur ethe forerunners didnt create the flood. why would they do this? but yeah they did creat the 7 rings to contain and study them but as 343 GS says at the end of halo 2 they exhausted every strategic option so they activated the rings to they themselves (obviously with great power and knowledge in each one) activated the rings to kill themselves, thus not letting the flood getting they ggrimy little tentacles onto their knowledge or technology. *takes breath* wheuf
