About the flood and the Halos. The forerunners built the Halos to contain the flood virus. If you remember from halo 1 (and i think its mentioned a few times in halo 2) there are containment sheilds which hold the flood virus. In both halos the covenant let down these sheilds by mistake which released the flood on them.

So its pretty obvious the halos where made to hold the flood, and if they escaped, destroy their hosts.
One last thing, someone said about the covenant calling the humans 'devils'. That idea is slightly wrong, they look down on humans but they call the master cheif 'demon'. This is because they are religious and when they fought master cheif he wasnt like normal humans....seeing as he single handedly wiped out their stupid holy ring.

What I'd like to discuss is Gravemind.
I think he was only created so they wouldn't have to alter the story too much and because otherwise the Master chief wouldn't have got from regret to the Level Gravemind and the arbiter from quarentine zone to uprising doz that make any sense? I think so.

i think gravemind is the "leader" of the flood. i think the forerunners found him and he could produce flood spores. they probably took samples off him and were just in process of studying the flood until their unexpected demise.

and i also think the covenant dont know there are multiple rings. they talk about the destruction of the first one as a tragedy to their great journey. then when in the mausoleum they talk about how fate gave them another ring.

I think gravemind is like the queen from alien or just a ants nest. The flood create him to rule over them and if he dies..make another. Oh and the flood is a virus so genetic experiment gone wrong sounds good.

One thing that keeps bugging me is: why would there be any Flood on the first Halo? If all that was left was spores, then why didn't weren't the Sentinels programmed to finish the job?! As it was, the chamber that the Marines were slaughtered in seemed to be set up as a trap for anyone who came looking around the labs. Was it intended as a trap, or just as some kind of test chamber to examine the Flood spores' effects on "test subjects"? That would support the "Flood as bio-weapon" hypothesis - except that the Flood would also fry the Forerunners (and did) if it was released!
Hmmm . . . just thought of a new possibility. The reason that there are still Flood around is that because research was still being conducted by Halos' automatic systems. The Forerunner left a program in place to try and find a cure for the Flood, or an effective countermeasure. This might explain why the containment doors in the first Halo's Flood labs weren't strong enough to avoid being smashed in by the infected Marines/Elites.

And Halo 2 has given us the Gravemind to consider. I have an idea about where it might have come from. Remember that Flood "thing" Captain Keyes and that Covenant Captain Elite were being assimilated into in the mission where Master Chief had to get Keyes' neural thing (can't remember name, sorry)? Maybe the "thing" was in the process of evolving into a Graveind.
Or maybe - into "the" Gravemind? It seemed odd that the Halos' detonation hadn't killed the Gravemind. If the "thing" from Halo 1 survived and evolved into the Gravemind, that might explain how it avoided being destroyed by the Halos. And maybe why the Flood seem to have gotten a bit smarter, and can now drive vehicles.

This is my first post; sorry if it's long.
