just downed but almost no matter what they die after you do that so yah

yeah technically they are dead after you pick them up to use as a shield. so even if you die with a shild still up (chainsawed from behind etc) the shield cannot be brought back 2 life

As soon as you pick them up they are still alive yes, but are counted as dead. No matter what you do they die. Their captive. Hence it showing (player) killed (player) when your in multiplayer and you take someone hostage.
