I would rate it an 8/10 also. It has great single player and multiplayer, if you are playing offline.
Online isn't that great though because if someone has a bad internet connection, it goes really really really slow. Also, online you can only play timed matches and can only play for two minutes.

No, you have to register people's friend codes if you want to play online using all the options.
There is another tab besides the "With Anyone" option that Daagor's talking about. The one that says "With Friends" is the one you what you want to select if you want to get the best out of your online play. However, like any other Nintendo online game, you have to exchange friend codes with another human being in order to play online using all the different sets of rules.
As for the OP, if you want an unbiased opinion on the game, read this post.
The single player is not great. It's good, just not great. The addition of an actual story mode, as well as classic, all star and event adds depth to the single player mode, but that's not what you're going to be buying the game for.
The multiplayer is phenomenal. All the additions of past games have been kept, and a few key glitches have been removed. (wavedashing most notably) The online play isn't bad, it still uses Nintendo's flawed "friendcodes" system, but it's still pretty fluid and playable for the most part. However, if you're using an internet connection from the fifties, then this isn't the game for you. It will lag, it's not like mario kart (which is virtually lag-free) and if you can't afford a good broadband connection, then Wi-Fi probably isn't for you.
Overall, I'd give the single player mode a 8.5, The multiplayer gets a ten. And since multiplayer is about 75% of the game, that averages out to a 9.65 as a total score from me.

So you have more game choices if you add people to your friends list and then play with them?
That's cool ....... didn't know that. Thanx. Once I find out what my code is, I will probably post it somewhere.
