Pick a pokemon that you like and play through the game with it and others that you really like. I completely dumped my starter and played through the game with a poliwag (cant find my freaking trade cable to get a politoed) and picked up a Magby and Umbreon along the way and breeed through all the gyms, the Elite Four, and it only took me two tries to beat Red. Do not use 6 pokemon, this will lower the levels of your pokemon and weaken you considerably.
