Every car is build for a specific type of race so you wont be able to find a fast-cheap car suitable for all modes.
I strongly recommend one of the evos for grip events, it is not the most cheap one but is the fastest among the cheapests. I went through all the game with one of the evos. For drag..It doesnt matter wich car you use if you dont have the money to level it up to level 4, so forget about winning all drag events if you dont have many horses. You can try one of the old muscle cars, they are cheap and fasts and they have many horses under the hood from factory, if you cant afort it try the cobalt or the civic but you will have to replace it eventually. For drifting.. definetively the RX-7 is the best one, can also try the Nissan Silvia and the mustang.
For the speed challenge....???Sorry, cant help you here...Im still stuck on this part of the game but some one told me to use the Audi RS4 or the Porsche 911 turbo.

    Good Luck

RS4 is a good one,but Porsche 911 is too much car for an inexperienced driver.
