Damn the hardest stages for me are the narrow speed challenges I can't seem to make a stable enough car.

I'm right there with you Deathgiver, I beat the Ryo challenges on pure luck, his speed challenges were the hardest so far.
Now I have beaten everything but the last speed challenge section and the Speed King, I can't control the cars on those tracks.

Drifting can be so cheap in this game, they made a mistake by letting you build drift scores while hitting/scraping walls.
I don't think tuning is very important for drifting, I didn't do anything special.
If you're on a straight away, just get into a drift while scraping the front left/right bumper on the wall, the longer you keep a drift going the more bonus points you get.
Ryo's drift tracks are the hardest, but I just used the wall scraping technique, it was pretty easy that way, and it doesn't damage your car.
By the way, I used the Supra for drifting, and the EvoIX for speed tracks, the Evo was the best controlling car I could find for the Speed tracks.
