I am having the same problem, I cannot seem to leave the city and have tried to many times to count. Now getting frustrated and grumpy......

Right sussed it, at last. Select 1 group of soldiers and get them to hold the gate open that is closest to your starting position while your Knight and the remaining group of soldiers leg it through the now open gate. Yipee
