Go to halo.wikia.com/wiki/MJOLNIR and you will see the varients of armor!
The Mark IV is the armor in halo wars and at that time we know there are lots of spartans in halo wars! This may mean the chief goes back in time!
Maybe (can't remember) the lost spartans in the novels have the mark IV armor as they haven't upgraded and you find them in the game!
Maybe some new spartans come along with this unknown varient!
Halo Wars took place on or shortly after Contact Harvest-2524. By that time, Mark V armor was already introduced.
I believe that the Spartan II's received their Mark V armor to fight back the pirates or to put down rebellions, before the first encounter with the Covenant. Either that or it was the Mark IV with no shields and AI port.
What you see as the variants is actually C.Q.B and the E.V.A armor variants. Designed for multiplayer options to customize one's armor. I'm not sure if Bungie is going to put it into the Haloverse or just leave it as a multiplayer extra.

I got it wrong! It's just standard HellJumper helmets! It would be cool with more spartans! But still it does look like the MJOLNIR Mark IV or the Unknown Variant!
