Pros: There are very few fire types that you can pick from in the start of the game, so to get one other than ponyta it must be Chimchar. Can learn good fighting moves to beat the first gym leader. Chimchar has very good overall stats that are very well balanced. Once he evolves he also has the advantage over many types of pokemon due to being fighting and fire. He can learn many moves both by levels and by TMs. Infernape won't be affected much by types like: fire, grass, ice, bug, dark, or steel. Infernape is strong over: grass, ice, bug, steel, normal, rock, and dark.

Cons: Chimchar does not learn a lot good offensive moves early on and never learns a lot of fire moves by level (lots of fighting later on). Infernape is weak to types like: water, ground, flying, psychic, and his fighting moves can't hurt ghost at all.
