The get a Ship of the Line you choose one nation, either French, English or Dutch, (Not Spanish, cause they have galleons instead) and you attack every piece of that nations shipping that you can and a Ship of the Line should appear eventually. I've gotten one at least once.

The Ship of the Line is usually called "New Warship" unless it's a pirate hunter. (You see different ships called "New Warship" and only some are the good ones. You see them occasionally just sailing around. The surefire way to get one is as already stated, tick off any nation except Spain bad enough to send out their big guns against you.

Dead easy to get, once you have chain shot and a decent refire rate, just mangle english or french shipping by st kitts/antigua, (use chainshot to wipe out their sails so they'll surrender) Eventually they'll send one after you, it'll be named as New Warship - Ship of the Line. And can be got at any difficulty level.

i got a ship of line i figured the english would have it since it is related to the frigate so i attacked only english until i saw the ship of line as an escort and attacked it has 48 guns, max 450 crew, 100 tons cargo, andup to 18 knots max. good luck to evry1 i found it in the english citys by antigua and the other two citys

You have to play in a later era to encounter the ship of the line

I know a way, you attack the french, dutch or english shipping relentlessly until ship that says new warship will pop up. that is your ship of the line

The era needs to be 1660+ and you need to pretty much camp outside of a few prosperous french, Dutch, or English cities and take out all their economic ships.

If you take out the invasion, raider, or mayor ships it'll lower the prosperity. you want the cities to be wealthy enough to build one.

It'll show up as a New Warship - Ship of the Line.

Took me about 1 hour camped outside St Kitts and it's neighbor to get mine.

I contest that.

I started in 1640 on Journeyman (or whatever is the 2nd difficulty) signed with the English, and I had one by 1641.

All I did was raid a few dutch and french ships, nothing special. I hardly had any gold from it at all. I had a 6,000 gold price on my head by the french, and none at all with the dutch.

I was around Montserrat, and saw a dutch fluyt headed towards St Martin/St. Eustatius, so I followed it, and just as I got to St. Martin, there appears a Ship of the Line.

Blasted away for a bit with my Royal Sloop to rob the SOTL of their cannon advantage, whittled away their crew for a bit, then boarded. Whamo, all mine.

It was weird, because the past times I've played, I haven't seen one no matter how many times I attacked a nation, or what era I set it on.
