"Yeah, sure...people believe they can do it...but IS it for real?"

Apply that to 50% of your previous statements please

"Well there is a big difference between someone actually being infused with the powers of the Holy Spirit...and talking jibberish.

I'd like to know where the jibberish part even came from."

So, hang on, there's a difference? Why do we care? Why is ths holy? What's holy about speaking a language that noone can understand? What's so holy about being a loony? If I gave you a random jumble of words over the net and said it was the Holy Spirit infusing my hands, would you believe me?

    I surely would not.
But since most of you say that even things we write here need some backup...does religion has its backup? Is the book here we are following if we are belivers?
If book is religion...you can make Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter a religion, it certanly has people who like it.

I mean...someone wrote these books, but we know they are not real...can we say the same for the bible or any religion that is based on a book?

"Of course he's an authoritarian figure, don't be ridiculous."

Yeah, he has authority over the Church, but that is better than no one having authority.

Why don't people cecede from the US or the UK because they don't like the authority in those specific countires?

"That's one of the problems. There's almost no doubt Jesus was historical, however there's no real evidence that Jesus was what is said about him. Look at the three stories about him in the Bible. They differ in so many ways that it's impossible to say that they can be treated as real proof for Jesus or anything he did."

So the Shroud of Turin means nothing?

The fact that it hasn't decayed and proven to be around 2000 years old (by secular scientists) with an image of a man who looks like Jesus means nothing?

"The Buble can be made to say anything, I notice that Christians only follow some parts of the Bible. If you're all so devout, why don't you follow everything to the word?"

I was wondering what the 'Buble' was for a while...but then Bible came to mind.

Anyways...it is more the Protestants who 'beleive what they want to believe. Hence the tens of thousands of Protestant denominations that have roots to Martin Luther and the Catholic Church.

The Bible is full of metaphors and parables.

"With the difference that I've seen a three leaved clover while I have never seen the trinity."

Of course, that is where faith comes into play.

I was trying to use St. Patrick's example on explaining the Trinity.

    Three leaves on one stem.

    Three persons in one God.

"So, hang on, there's a difference? Why do we care? Why is ths holy? What's holy about speaking a language that noone can understand? What's so holy about being a loony? Of course not...I'm just wondering where the jibberish part even came from.

When the Apostles were infused with the Holy Spirit, they didn't speak jibberish.

Harry Potter and LOTR are meant to be fiction. The Bible is not.

And at least the Gospels have been written soon after the death of Jesus....long time ago.

Oh, and the Bible is a collection of books by different people, not one person's immagination.

"Why don't people cecede from the US or the UK because they don't like the authority in those specific countires?"

Because it's expensive and we have a higb living standard in our countries.

"So the Shroud of Turin means nothing?

The fact that it hasn't decayed and proven to be around 2000 years old (by secular scientists) with an image of a man who looks like Jesus means nothing?"

I quote from wikipedia: 'Some believe it is the cloth that covered Jesus of Nazareth when he was placed in his tomb. Evidence exists showing how such an image could be recorded on the fibres of the shroud at or near the time of his proclaimed resurrection. Radio carbon dating experts contend the shroud is a medieval hoax or forgery based on only 3 dating experiments carried out in 1988. These experiments have since been found to be seriously scientifically flawed."

"Harry Potter and LOTR are meant to be fiction. The Bible is not."

O really? How do you know that? Were you there when it was written, did you interview the author?

"Oh, and the Bible is a collection of books by different people, not one person's immagination."

Correct, yes. However they may have been based off one another, one man's fiction inspiring other, who thought he really meant what he wrote.

What's wrong with Protestantism? So we think we can get to God without Jesus's EARTHLY mother or confess to God without talking to some EARTHLY priest. So we think we can go straight to God by ourselves. So we know that no man can claim the power to excommunicate us from our Father. Why would a man even say he could? It's BLASPHEMY. I've had enough of the assumptions that only Catholics exist, enough of prejudice! I was born Catholic, turned Baptist, and was happy. Now WHO are we against? Right. Focus.

To darkish: You are wondering where the jibberish came from? Go to church. Have you never seen this happen? Some random person in the aisles starts yelling out to God...but you can't understand what he's saying? It's because he believes that he has been filled with the Holy Spirit. Which as stated before, sounds like bull if the bible is telling the truth. We would be able to understand the guy if he was really speaking in 'tongues.' Point made, so understand it this time. Gosh, next question...

Never couldn't understand someone like that in church...A. B, Darkish just SAID that the apostles were PREACHING, not spouting gibberish. C, how old were the others in this retreat? Conformity is powerful, as I'm sure you know, which brings me to D. If there is no God, why feel bad? I might've lied, too, sorry to say, but my youth makes me semi-conformative. They probably all did. So why do you feel bad about lying about something you say doesn't exist? E. Give me a site name, address, anything.
