i have trueflame and hopesfire and when i kill the king it says i have ruined the games. is there a way to get his ring without killing him

Once you finish the main quest and report to him for the last time it doesn't matter what it says, his charater is done there is nothing else for him to do. I killed him and it said the same thing, but it doesn't hurt your game. The ring will make sure that no magic will ever get to you again.

Your best bet is to attack the gaurds first because the king has a paralize jinksblade, and his ring so don't cast spells.
