I've managed to find some success with the weak ship option. I usually pause the game, select an enemy ship, then the next enemy ship, then press the option. Then just to be safe, I check my ships to see if any were hit and use the shield and hull options on them.
I just tried to use the option with LujanD's method and I can confirm success. I did not blow up any of my ships 😀
Oh and it may sound stupid, but I'm relieved people here are asking about a troop size limit option...I thought I was just to inept in micro managing my ships against those countinous boarding actions. Glad its not just me.

Thank the Emperor! The final tyranid mission in the imperial campaign is just stupid hard...only way I could beat it was bumping the leadership value up enough to bring in 12 mars class battlecruisers at the same time, and it took all that nova cannon fire, hordes of bombers, plasma bombs, and the dang hive ship still needed quite a lot of regular gunnery to finish it off.

You need to add unlimited troop capacity or something because opponent ships almost always bored your ships which bypasses both hull and shield.
This. We need our unlimited troop capacity back (UNLIMITED RATINGS! NONE SHALL INVADE OUR SHIP!), I would put a request for it but I ain't Lifetime + member. Just your regular boring Lifetime member.
Yeah same here. i can't even find the the option to vote for the extra option that other guy set up.
