On Laras first visit to Copper Mill, after she gets rope arrows, if she attempts to bring a gas or tin can to be crafted as an explosive, the can will disappear as she goes through the gateway. Throwing the can into the area won't work either. However, if Lara has collected 120 coins at this point, she can buy the grenade launcher which will work. There is only one explosive barrier I recall, so it is not that big of a deal.

I suspect that the game prevents Lara from bringing in the cans since it wants here to use the molotov ****tails instead.
