When I get home from work tonight I will be sending you my save file that has progressed enough in the game to level up magic. I'll also send along some screen shots that will explain what we are looking for.

I am including a save that is located in the moogle village. Three out of 8 types of magic are unlocked, one of which can be fully leveled.
Only the Buddy characters can use magic, the main character cannot use magic at all.
Magic XP is generated for the element upon casting this element.
The screenshots in the zip show how to get to the magic status, where you can see the magic xp % and the level, as well as how to cast.
savegame should be placed under "c:\users\\documents\my games\secret of mana"

The Magic is in the Ring Menues... if you enter the "main" menu with the armor and stats and such, and tap up or down on the D-Pad (or whatever the keyboard command is) you get to Weapons, Items, and on the Girl and Sprite "Magic".

Magic is leveled similar to how Weapons are leveled up, you use the combat magic on enemies, you use the support magic on friends, and each "successful use" gains you a point of skill toward a level up.

There are 8 types of magic total, but each of the two only have 7 magic types. They both share 6, but only one gains access to Luna and the other to Shade (if I remember right).

It has been a while, but I believe Magic caps at level 8, tho it might cap at 9 since weapons also have a final cap of 9 (based on achievement description).

Just chiming in to clear up some details about how magic exp is handled in this game:
It's a simple 4-byte value that ranges from 0-899 with each 100 being 1 level of magic and any remainder showing as the % progress to the next level. This means the max potential value for magic in the game is level 8.99 (or level 8 with 99% exp) on each Elemental Spirit.
Primm (Girl) and Popoi (Sprite) each gain access to 6 "shared" Spirits (though each is tracked individually for magic levels, not shared) and 1 unique Spirit each, for a total of 14 Spirits to level up. Randi (Boy) never gets any magic, so no worries there.
You gain magic exp per spirit by casting any spell, doesn't matter which one or how much it costs as they all give the same xp value within that level, but yield less xp with higher levels. The cap is determined by the number of Mana Seeds you've sealed/synchronized with after defeating bosses in the Temples. Each new seed adds 1 new level on the cap.

Magic cap used to be 899, so level cap should be 8 with a special magic attack being unlocked at 8 and the likelyhood of that special attack getting higher as you near the cap.

The trainer is not applying the cheats any longer, tried re-downloading etc, this is not working from what I can see.

Was working less than 24 hrs ago.

'Not applying the cheats' and 'not working' like in ...? What options? All of them? Where? When?

And as you say the trainer worked for you 24h earlier: What happened on your PC in those 24hrs? Any updates or new installations? What did you try to troubleshoot already?
