After a recent update with Bitdefender Anti-Virus, they have started to detect "tmp" files from trainers (confirmed for Windows Store games at least) and deleting the game executable file when you activate a trainer. It is detecting them as MALWARE and you cannot recover the files, you can only re-install it.

It also deletes a few SYSTEM files - see attached file.

Not really sure what to do about this, I added exclusions in my firewall & advanced threat defense but it seems to detect them only after you try to activate the trainers in-game.

BitDefender has become more and more aggressive with their false positives and ignoring user generated exclusions with their newest software version. We get complaints on a daily basis. We personally would recommend that everyone stop using BitDefender, ask for refund if you purchased it, stating the reason why and then find a better alternative.

I had an issue recently where they charged me for another year even though I'd only recently renewed my subscription of 2 years, ended up with 2 extra free years. Not sure they'll refund me now :/ Only got this one because my whole family can use it.

    What one would you recommend?

Pretty much anything but BitDefender. That's the one we have the most trouble with. Taurusplopp has more experience with the various security products and our trainers and could provide a better recommendation than myself. I just use Windows Defender.

Bitdefender made a bad move with their Advanced Threat Defense module. To me it seems more like a rushed implementation because of the ransom ware attacks earlier this year and last year. This feature was already in their 2017 products, hidden in the settings and disabled by default. But if you now dare to disable it, you'll be doomed!

Many security software companies use BD's database and it's still one of the best products on the market. It's slick and doesn't have an impact on your system's resources with great protection. But they're on the brink to make it a crappy bloatware with a huge number of different modules all over to deceive the user into a false sense of security.

Don't use McAfee or Webroot. Both are not able to exclude a whole folder, which is, imho a key feature not only when it comes to our trainers.

As always: Know what you're dealing with and what the software can do for you and how it does it. Don't rely on automated processes but set everything to manual override, get notified and be asked what to do and how to deal with something. You should have the control, not the other way around.

Take a look at the current performance of security software here -> Link or here -> Link, download trial versions and install them in a virtual machine or get a first impression by watching some videos on our AV Notification page here -> Link

Thanks for the thorough reply, I loved Bitdefender when I joined them a year ago and now they just cause more problems than anything. I've used Kaspersky briefly before and have a friend who's used them for years. Would you recommend them? Only downside is I can only use up to 5 users instead of 10.

Kaspersky is good as well. What I completely dislike about it, is the folder-sub-folder-subsub-folder system where you can easily get lost just to make one exclusion or check the logs or something.

Plus, they use funny IT high-tech super mysterious marketing names for some features no one understands but them (or do they?) with no real advantage.

If you like fiddling around for 10mins because you don't look it up every day and forgot the way to ... whatever option, go for Kaspersky.

On a side note: Ask your friend out of the blue to create a file exclusion or look up the quarantine and let him stop the time for it.
