Downloaded trainer for Civ 5 and while unpacking the winrar, AVG detects "Skodna.Gamehack.FTF" and blocks winrar from unpacking it. It lists this detection as Adware. Is it possible that the trainer is contaminated?

Not at all. CH trainers, especially the Temp file that 0x90's editors have (called ~Mnn133.tmp), are often false positives, meaning that they are detected as malicious but certainly are not. Think of it like this, all companies need to make money. How do they do that? Sell you something. If your antivirus detects everything, you think "wow this must really work" so you spend money on the AV. That's how AV scams you of your money while not being very good at detecting anything malicious at all.
