Those "security" software are built to keep you caged between their walls (not to protect wherever you browse), control is their motto, freedom is their enemy 🙁
Windows 10 does the same and it was free. 😋
Do people even use Norton? And this is a legit question, not trying to poke some fun. I had Norton installed for about 2 and a half minutes. I moved on from the free AV software mostly because they are underperforming and they're resource hogs. I switched to Kaspersky few years back and now I'm on F-Secure, they do a much better job regarding protection and don't hog resources like mad.
Despite their negative reputation, Symantec (and McAfee) are popular in the enterprise sector due to support given to IT administrators.
A workplace where dozens of workstations exist with Symantec being compromised would make a nice addition to a bot army. Many forget the enterprise sector and often they can provide powerful backbones. It often goes unnoticed because it makes for boring news but several attacks do happen daily. You can take a look at these animated maps and logs to get a glimps of how endemic it really is.
