About the problem someone got with a "cheated" race, finding that also some AI races are "cheated", I think that when the game choose randomly the AI opponents it chooses amongst ALL the available races, including the customized ones (and thus, the "cheat", just changing the basic race traits but leaving the rest (with their basic pro/cons). That's the reason we find some races with many traits.

My suggestion is, to avoid creating a "cheated" race, then once in game, edit your own race in the race panel. Using the console command to finish the research instantly, the effect will be immediate.
    IMHO.

How can you edit race traits after you get in the galaxy? Tried to find it, but so far, no luck.

You go in the "contacts" (next to the galaxy on the upper left of the screen), choose the races tab, then your race and at the bottom of the panel in the race portrait there is "Modify".
You choose it (providing you have enough points), modify the race, and it starts a research to apply the genetic modifications. The more the modifications the longer the research, but with "finish_research" you'll have it completed instantly.

considering Cal says in the trainer info "Don't be an idiot and try to use this against players" I'd say no :P

This has been answered in the Site FAQ and the answer has not been changed for years. Our patience with this question being asked multiple times is growing very thin.

Try it without the cheats its fun to 😀 normaly i will say no but this game is even fun without it.

Each to their own i always say, but with this recent patch of the game 1.0.2 i am on about, it will remove any factions you have created with the trainer, but it seems it leaves the saved games alone for now, but if you use the trainer, you will have to create the faction over and over and over and over again.

Same issue. Unfortunately it seems that 3 trainer options are useless now - you can start the game with the custom race you made that uses excessive amount of points but AI will use them as well.

At the same time you can't save that race, quit the game and start the game without trainer since the race will be deleted.

Thankfully you can use the trainer to activate the console in Ironmode and add the traits you like by entering console commands.
