In many of the gameplay videos, if a buddy takes too much damage they are automatically Fultoned to safety.
Even if nothing show it on screen, buddys except Dwalker have both a health and Stamina stat (who change depending of a points system hiden too)
The value of their health and stamina decrease when they take damages from lethal and non lethal weapons respectively.
If they lost the totality of their health or stamina they fall KO and are repatriate on Mother Base and stay unavailable for some time.

They've shown it multiple times in gameplay videos where D-horse, D-dog, D-walker, and even Quiet go down and just either take time to become available again, or get fultoned out.
If they take too much damage or diee all the time, they'll stop trusting you though
