We are gonna see EA conference in E3 next week which I can't wait to see some new gameplay footages and trailers. But I am curious whether this game is gonna be alternate timeline or sometime in future after ME:3.
I hope this game doesn't turn out to be another disappointment as ME:3.
It is before.
At a time the humans were branching out, so you will get to meet the Batarians, etc all over again.
I also heard it's gonna be like prequel which has nothing to do with Shepherd's story but then recent tweet from developer said that it is not a prequel but this does not mean it is sequel either. This is where I am confusing a lot but we are gonna see ME:4 in next week in E3 conference so I have to wait and see.
It isn't a prequel because it won't lead up to Shepard's story. Although it is set in the same Universe it is a different time.
I can tell you from what I remember before my contract with Bioware was done, was that they have planned the universe to be 4 times larger than ME3.
They were confident also in having a base set up on specific systems to help with fighting against "the bad guys"
But like I said last year and a bit, it won't be called ME4, that is just a temporary title being used because most fans called it ME4.
You will be able to see the events of the First Contact War and the war in the Skylian Verge against the Batarians. Allegedly :P

It will not before the Mass Effect trilogy timeline. New galaxy and some new villains. Per Bioware
While we aren’t ready to go into too many details just yet, as you saw in the trailer and can tell by the name, this game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy. You will play a human, male or female, though that’s actually not the character you saw in the trailer (more on that later). You’ll be exploring an all-new galaxy, Andromeda, and piloting the new and improved Mako you saw. And through it all, you will have a new team of adventurers to work with, learn from, fight alongside of, and fall in love with.
That is what I was hoping for at the very least, that the storyline will take place after the events of ME3. Watching the trailer it looks like we might get to see a civilization not based upon the mass effect field.
