I just purchased a nVidia GTX 970 graphics card to replace my aging GTX 550ti, and I could not be happier. The one question I do have is about the use of "Super Resolutions" or use of resolution higher than 1080p on a 1080p monitor. What are the benefits of these higher resolutions, and are they worth using?

Very nice bro. Don't know if you saw the thread but Drenus here at CH just got a new PC and he got a 970 in his. If you want to see the thread it's here: [url]www.cheathappens.com/show_board2.asp?headID=125012&titleID=8463'>Link He started out with a PC problem and ended up with a new PC. He said there was a report about a problem with the last half a GB of VRAM on the 970 but he got one anyway. Link for that in that thread as well.

Honestly, on my rig, I have a 30" screen that reportedly does does 2550x1440 natively. I set it at that and I don't get lag - always a solid 60 fps in most games - but things just feel snappier at either 1920 x 1200 or 1920 x 1080. So I almost always use one of those settings. Looks fantastic almost always so I'm happy.

I'd be interested in your settings and such so let us know after you've kicked the tires a bit will ya?

I about read the RAM issue on the 970 cards, but the 980 was ridiculous in price here. The 970 was 14,500 baht or about $450, whereas the 980 was 25,000 baht or about $760. The prices are high because of the 30% import tax on all electronics. Which is really funny, because many of the products are made right here in Thailand!

What i am talking about, is nVidia wants the game set at 2550X1440 but then "down sample" it to the 1920X1080 natural resolution of the monitor. I will be trying it on Shadows of Mordor tonight.

I think he is talking about the way the 970/980 can do what they call Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR). Its using (in my case for BF4) 2715x1527 DSR and then scales it back down to 1920x1080. I tried used it a few times but the only real noticeable effect I saw was that my mouse movement was slowed way down. I do not really think it looked any better than before to be honest and it does not seem to work with all games, the only ones I have noticed the option on so far is BF 4 and Diablo 3.

I'm using a monitor from LG with 3440x1440 (ultra wide) resolution. It is definitely worth it when you go for multi window usage. Where other people have three monitors I can have the same space with just one monitor.

Some people say that with 4k resolution you don't need AA anymore but that is not true. It looks better but to be honest 4k is a bit overrated if you expect quality changes.

What is really worth for gaming is getting an ultra wide screen monitor because it feels more intensive due to the increase "be in the game" feeling.

If you have an Nvidia card you can "fake" 4k resolution anyway it will be just downscaled to your monitor resolution. There is not much difference in the "fake" 4k and the real 4k except the real 4k is also used in Desktop environment which I've said before.

Thank you all for the reply. I gave the "Super Dynamic Resolution" a shot in Skyrim. While it looked a little better, it was not better enough to use all the time. I will have to re-visit it later when I play a newer game that is supported.

As far as real 4K goes, I will not be going there until the monitors are available locally at a reasonable price. There is not any real discount trying to order it online after paying shipping and sometimes import taxes.

I agree with 0X90. My next investment will be to an ultra widescreen. 4K didn't look that jaw dropping when I saw it over the others there. I don't know if my eyes could appreciate 4K but I could see using a good widescreen.

NVidia says DSR has been on cards back to GTS 450, GTX 465 and all the way up. Check these links at NVidia and a demo video:

    It looks so simple.

I have the GTX 980 and couldn't be any happier. I also upgraded my ram to 32GB. Dying Light also uses this feature. My monitor is a 27" LED IPS 1080p and using this feature or not, I can not tell one shred of difference, good nor bad. it looks identical to me either way. The FPS are the same either way too.
