The game crashes if I activate the trainer at the menu and attempt to load. Was able to activate the trainer ingame and attempted to use the money cheat. Pressing esc causes game to crash.
Running original steam version of the game on windows 7. No antivirus/antimalware running.

Lets see how we can fix this..
I still think you don't have it on steam, as it should force you to start up Uplay if it was.
Thusly it should be the same binary for the trainer to use.
So post the ACU.exe file details?

It does run Uplay. If I try to just load it from the Uplay launcher however, Uplay loads Steam. The game is in the Steam folder. The Uplay launcher just verifies the damned thing. As far as ACU.exe details, the only thing I can think to give you is the properties details and that only has information for the type, size, and date modified.
I already posted the crash information. Not sure what else could be useful that I would know how to get.
Just in case it is a different version entirely. Would be interesting to see if they have a different Steam binary than a straight Uplay download.
Did you get a cd-key on the right side menu of the game page, so you can download and install from Uplay directly? Basically if all else fails.
It doesn't give a version number, and my cd keys on the game page are the same as the steam keys.
Apparently, I cannot install directly through Uplay. I have to go through Steam. I thought going through Uplay directly may solve the issue, but it just tries to open Steam regardless if the game is installed or not.

Thats damn weird, usually they give a Uplay key also.
I am also experiencing crashes at main menu after trainer activated. steam version on windows 7. however I preloaded mine. do you think that may have something to do with it. maybe a fresh install?

Numpad 8: Mega Creed Points - to use this option, you must first press the ESC
key and then scroll down to the UPLAY menu option. Then press
this option key. When you go to purchase Weapons or Clothing you
will see that you can purchase them and the value increases when
you purchase something.
Numpad 9: 99 LockPicks - to use this option, you must first press the ESC
key and then scroll down to the UPLAY menu option. Then press
this option key. When you press the lockpick skill or check
how many you have with a vendor you will see you have more.
Numpad 0: 500 Sync Points - press this option key then enter the area
where you buy your skills. You will see that you can buy
skills and when you purchase a skill you will have more points.
Please note that this does not remove the other skill requirements.
