In a recent driver update nvidia dropped support for older graphics cards that many of us were using for Physx cards, I want to say anything 400 series or before. I was using a 285. If you have any of these cards in your system while attempting to install any of the newer drivers, it will blue screen during the install, and will prevent your computer from booting again until you remove the card.

That sounds very strange to be honest.

I have a 460 I use as a Physx card. So no idea why you cannot use your 285.

The blue screen usually is a hardware fault, are you sure your 285 isn't faulty after its long use?

Oh and Don't forget some tuts on ASM and defeating DMA

    Clicky Here for them

Yeah, I'm very sure on this one. It is a system hang during driver install, and it resolves by pulling the card out of the system. There were tons of people screaming about it in the nvidia forums. Especially since the installer did nothing to warn you about it ahead of time.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
