What? Its a single player only game.
yes, but does it log into a server? do you have to 'log in' to play, etc?

It's the Unity engine as well so if you could find some interesting debug commands that would be nice but that would depend on what Obsidian has added to the game I suppose. (Currently the beta is pretty limited and based on a build they showed at gamescon or what it's called so it's a bit like a demo.)
EDIT: As to the above it's like with Wasteland 2 I guess, offline only. (And probably a separate DRM free copy on GOG or something on release.)

um, apparently the kickstarter/backer thing ended august 22. so this game isn't really even 'for sale'. I don't see it on STEAM either..
so you DO have to log in to download it or whatever, correct?

Oh yeah that's true, it was a Kickstarter project initially and then they kept selling it on their website - Link
For non-backers wanting beta access (For Kickstarter that was the 110$ pledge and higher though it also came with many other perks.) that requires purchase of the base game and the beta "add-on" for I think it's around 25$ for each.
Beta itself is updated and maintained via Steam but since it's not available via early-access like some other games it's understandable if you won't make a trainer for the game until it's released in full.
EDIT: The URL's I copied in seems to have failed but the address should be visible though googling "Pillars of Eternity" or "Project Eternity" should show it as one of the first results.

can you PURCHASE the beta through steam? I don't see it anywhere.
my "this game is going to be a lot of trouble until it's actually released' radar is going off..

Caliber, it's not for sale on Steam and won't be until closer to release(pre-order). Steam codes were given to people who backed it, only.
I can confirm it's an offline only game, unless playing multiplayer.
So don't worry about creating a trainer for the beta, as there's no way to acquire it outside of waiting for release or having backed it.

Offline only game unless playing MultiPlayer? MP is online so it's both and you can play SP offline?
The WIKI still says this:
How will I get my digital copy of the game?
In the coming months, every backer will receive a survey asking them what platform and distribution network they would like. The game will be available at both GOG.com and Steam, so if you prefer DRM-free, you can choose the GOG option, and if you like Steam's integration, including achievements, and possibly cloud saves, you'll be able to choose that as well.
If you bought additional copies as add-ons, you'll be able to tell Obsidian which one you want per key.
