Does it get simpler or far more complicated? I started one with Zhao Yun and well gave up after about 20 minutes, as most of it made almost NO sense to me as to how to proceed in an chronological manner. However I think I could get into the RPG-esque aspect of it.
I thought it would be something like the original story mode from previous games, where you took over the entire land, not this crappy story mode, where no matter if you win every battle, people die (including your character) and you still end up not doing anything, and it remains as the "3 Kingdoms".
tl;dr Ambition mode, slightly overwhelming with no seeming chronological order or goals to proceed. Will it get worse or better? Any tips for someone starting out?

Think of Ambition Mode as more of an extension of Free Mode.
Basically, the battles are random and you are friends with everyone in the Kingdom. You get to fight the playable characters and they will follow you (they also become playable in Free Mode). Generic generals will also follow you and can become bodyguards.
If you want to collect the fast horses, this is the mode to go to.
